Class 8th Science E. Long Answer Questions: Ans. 1. Deforestation has following serious consequences on wild animals. Deforestation has a drastic effect on wild animals. As most of the wild animals build their habitat in forests. Deforestation often results in their habitat loss. Due to this, wild animals find it difficult to cope with the adverse climatic conditions. Thus, they became vulnerable to destruction and extinction. Also deforestation encourages people to hunt them for their valuable products such as hides, skin, horns, etc. This often results in their large scale poaching that may even wiped out their species completely. Ans 2. Biosphere Reserves: These are protected areas wherein people are an important component of the system. These are multipurpose protected area being developed to (i) conserve biodiversity (ii) preserve ecological balance and promote conservation. Ans3. The various factors leading to extinction of wild species and depletion of biodiversity are: #Habitat loss due to increase in human population: Great increase in human population in the last 70 years is responsible for the rapid decline of biodiversity because more and more land is needed for agriculture, housing, for making roads, and for constructing dams, bridges, powerhouses and industries. #Deforestation and overgrazing: Indiscriminate cutting of trees by man causes deforestation. Similarly, overgrazing by increased population of cattle and sheep, shrinkage of grasslands and loss of habitat of wild animals. #Pollution Air and water get polluted with insecticides used in agriculture, toxic elements released from industries and petroleum products. Weak and susceptible species are unable to tolerate the pollutants and are eliminated. #Introduction of exotic species: The species introduced into a new locality from some other area is called an exotic species. It competes with the species already existing in that area and may cause extinction of some native species. #Climate changes: Human activities are causing changes in the temperature and rainfall pattern. These are responsible for global warming and melting of glaciers. Such changes have adverse effect on biodiversity. #Human greed: International trade in wildlife and wildlife products has threatened the existence of tigers, bears, foxes, elephants, crocodiles, etc. Ans4. a. Forest: A large area of land on which trees and other plants grow naturally is called forest. Thus, forest refers to plant life. It also supports other forms of life such as microorgnaisms and animals.. b. Wildlife: The term wildlife means all the animals and plants which are found naturally in the forests and other natural habitats. Though the term wildlife also includes wild plats but it is most commonly used for wild animals and birds. c. National Parks: These are areas strictly reserved for conservation of wildlife (include flora and fauna both). No other activities are permitted. d. Sanctuaries: A sanctuary gives protection to fauna only. Here killing or capturing of any species of wild animals is prohibited. Harvesting of timber and collection of minor forest products are permitted.
