*Attending a ceremony which is held in honour of a deceased kaafir*
*Q:* Is it permissible to go to your neighbour's ceremony where only a serene band is playing and singing about his deceased mum and no other prayers are performed? The neighbour is a Hindu.
*A:* It is not permissible for a Muslim to be present in a non-Muslim ceremony which is held in honour and reverence of a deceased kaafir. If he participates in such a ceremony, then even though there are no prayers taking place, the environment is one of shirk and kufr, and there will be kufr and shirk connotations found in such a gathering, hence he will be sinful.
Another reason for him being sinful is that the kaafir who has died on kufr will remain in Jahannum for eternity, thus it is not permissible to praise him or show him any respect as he died on kufr and shirk, whereas in these ceremonies, the deceased is praised and revered, and discussions revolve around his honour.
Apart from this, there are many other wrongs that take place in the gathering (such as intermingling of women and men, playing of music, people bringing their idols, pictures of animate objects being present, kufr and shirk taking place in the discussions, etc.). By a Muslim participating, he will be party to all these sinful activities and haraam deeds, and there is fear of him risking his imaan.
Therefore, a believer should understand well that his allegiance is only to Allah Ta'ala and the Deen of Islam. If he becomes lax due to his friendship or relationship with the kuffaar and accommodates them in whatever they want him to do, he will be compromising in his deen and in his relationship with Allah Ta'ala, thereby becoming sinful. Hence, a believer should refrain from taking part in such gatherings or ceremonies.
And Allah Ta'ala knows best.

*Reciting Durood when Forgetting Something*
_Hazrat Anas (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “If you forget something, then recite Durood upon me, you will remember it if Allah Ta‘ala wills.”_
*Adding ‘Salaam’ in the Durood*
Hazrat Abu Sulaimaan Harraani (rahimahullah) says:
I once saw Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) in a dream and he said to me, “O Abu Sulaimaan, when you copy Ahaadith and my name is mentioned, I notice that you suffice on ‘Salaat’ and you do not send ‘Salaam’ upon me. Salaam (i.e. Wasallam) is a four-letter word, and for every letter, one will receive a tenfold reward (amounting to forty additional rewards). Why then do you throw away forty rewards?” (Al-Qowlul Badee’ Pg. 488)

*Hazrat Muaaz (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) Breaking the Idol of Amr bin Jamooh (radhiyallahu ‘anhu)*
In the 13th year after nubuwwat, 70 people from the Ansaar came for Hajj and embraced Islam at the hands of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). Among them was Hazrat Muaaz bin Jabal (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) who was from the Banu Salimah tribe of the Ansaar, and was among the first people of is tribe to embrace Islam.
When the Ansaar returned to Madinah Munawwarah after Hajj, they began inviting people to Islam. Most of the Banu Salimah clan had embraced Islam, besides a few of the elderly people who remained upon disbelief. Among them was Amr bin Jamooh who was among the chiefs and leaders of the Banu Salimah tribe prior to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) coming to Madinah Munawwarah.
Amr bin Jamooh used to keep a wooden idol called Manaat in his home. He used to worship this idol and show it great respect and honour. One day, a few of the young men of the Banu Salimah tribe who embraced Islam decided to throw the idol of Amr bin Jamooh in the dump when they found an opportunity to do so. Hence, during the night, Hazrat Muaaz bin Amr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) – the son of Amr bin Jamooh who had embraced Islam, together with Hazrat Muaaz bin Jabal (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), and a group of other youth, secretly entered the house of Amr bin Jamooh, removed his idol, and threw it upside down into one of the dumps of the Banu Salimah where people would throw their waste.
When Amr bin Jamooh woke up in the morning and found find his idol missing, he exclaimed, “Woe to you! Who has wronged our god (by stealing it) during the night?” He then went out in search of it, until he finally found it lying upside down in the dump. On finding it, he picked it up, washed it, applied perfume to it, and addressed it saying, “By Allah, if I find out who is doing this to you, I will certainly disgrace him!”
Each night that passed thereafter, when Amr bin Jamooh would go to sleep, Hazrat Muaaz bin Jabal and Hazrat Muaaz bin Amr (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma), together with a group of youth, would do the same thing to his idol. The next morning, upon awakening, Amr bin Jamooh would find his idol missing, and would again go out in search of it. Upon finding it, he would wash it, and apply perfume to it.
When this continued for some time, Amr bin Jamooh hung his sword around the neck of the idol and addressed it saying, “By Allah, I do not know who is doing this to you, but if there is any good in you, then you will be able to defend yourself! Here is a sword which I give to you (to defend yourself from the evildoers).”
That night, Hazrat Muaaz bin Jabal and Hazrat Muaaz bin Amr (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma), together with the group of youth, again returned to the house of Amr bin Jamooh to take away his idol. They removed the sword from the idol’s neck, tied a dead dog to it, and threw both – the dog with the idol tied to it – into one of the wells of the Banu Salimah tribe that was filled with people’s refuse and waste.
The following morning, Amr bin Jamooh once again found his idol missing. He went out searching for it, until he found in a dump tied to a dead dog. When he saw it in that humiliating and disgraceful state, he realized the truth and embraced Islam. He then addressed the idol saying:
تالله لو كنت إلها لم تكن أنت وكلب وسط بئر في قرن
By Allah! If you were a god, you and a dog would not be tied together in the middle of a well!
أف لمصرعك إلها مستدن الآن فتشناك عن سوء الغبن
Woe to you as a despised god while you are in the dirt and garbage! Now that we have considered you carefully, we have found you (i.e. worshipping you) to be bad deal!
فالحمد لله العلي ذي المنن الواهب الرزاق وديان الدين
So all praise be to Allah, the Most-High, Possessor of All Bounties, the Bestower of All Blessings, the Provider and Sustainer, and the One who Sent the True Deen (of Islam)

*The Burial of Abu Taalib*
When Abu Taalib passed away, Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) came to Rasulullah (sallallah ‘alaihi wasallam) and said, “Your old uncle, who was upon misguidance, has passed away.” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “Go and bury your father, and thereafter return to me before doing anything.”
Accordingly, Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) went and buried his father, Abu Taalib. When he returned to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) instructed him to make ghusal (as his father was a kaafir and his body was napaak – impure).
Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was extremely grieved at that time, as his father passed away upon kufr. Seeing him in this state of sorrow and grief, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) made special duas for him. The duas which Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) made for him on that occasion brought solace and happiness to his heart.
Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) explains, “On that occasion, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) made such duas that I am not prepared to exchange them for anything (in the world).” (Sunan Abu Dawood #3214, Musnad Ahmed #1093)
*The Punishment of Abu Taalib in Jahannum*
Hazrat Abbaas (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was the uncle of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and the brother of Abu Taalib. Allah Ta‘ala blessed him with imaan and Islam. One day, he said to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), “Your uncle, Abu Taalib, did a lot for you. He stood for you and supported you (though he did not embrace Islam). Will he benefit from you in any way in the Hereafter?”
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied, “Yes, Allah Ta‘ala will give him the lightest form of punishment in Jahannum because of me. His azaab will be that he will be made to wear shoes of fire. The fire will go through his body until his brains and his entire head will boil.” (Saheeh Muslim #209, 212)

*The Seerah of Rasullullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) – Part Fifty Two*
*The Demise of Abu Taalib and Hazrat Khadijah (radhiyallahu ‘anha)*
In the tenth year after nubuwwah, the boycott had terminated and the Muslims came out from the Valley of Abu Taalib. Not long thereafter, the uncle of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), Abu Taalib, passed away.
The demise of Abu Taalib occurred in the month of Shawwaal or the month of Ramadhaan. Three or five days later, the beloved and respected wife of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), Hazrat Khadijah (radhiyallahu ‘anha), also passed away.
Abu Taalib was over eighty years old at the time of his demise, and Hazrat Khadijah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) was sixty-five years old at the time of her demise.
Hazrat Khadijah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) was buried in Hajoon. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) himself went into the grave to bury her. No janaazah salaah was performed, as the injunction of the janaazah salaah had not yet been revealed at that time.
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was greatly saddened and grieved at that time, and he would refer to that year (the 10th year after nubuwwah) as “عام الحزن” (the Year of Sorrow and Grief).
(Sharhuz Zurqaani 2/38, 48-49, Al-Kaamil 1/507)
*Inviting Abu Taalib to Islam at the Time of His Demise*
When Abu Taalib was on his deathbed, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was worried and concerned that he should leave this world with imaan. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) thus came to Abu Taalib, but on arriving at his home, he found that Abu Jahl and Abdullah bin Abi Umayyah – two notorious leaders of the Quraish – were already present.
There was a place next to Abu Taalib empty, and Abu Jahl feared that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) will sit in that spot and invite Abu Taalib to Islam, so he quickly went and sat in that spot.
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), from where he was standing, began to encourage Abu Taalib to embrace Islam saying, “O my uncle! Recite the kalimah Laa ilaaha illallaah just once so that I will have a basis to intercede for you before Allah!”
Hearing this, Abu Jahal and Abdullah bin Abi Umayyah immediately interrupted and said, “O Abu Taalib! Are you going to turn away from the religion of your father, Abdul Muttalib?” Hearing this, Abu Taalib refused to recite the kalimah, and the last words he uttered before passing away were, “On the religion of Abdul Muttalib (i.e. I am passing away on the religion of my father, Abdul Muttalib).” Saying these words, Abu Taalib passed away.
In some narrations, it is mentioned that Abu Taalib said to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), “O Muhammed! If it was not for the Quraish taunting me and saying that out of fear for death, he embraced Islam, I would have definitely pleased you by reciting the kalimah and embracing Islam.”
Abu Taalib’s passing away upon kufr brought great grief and sorrow to the blessed heart of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). It is reported in the narration of Saheeh Bukhaari that at the time when Abu Taalib passed away upon kufr, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) addressed him saying, “By Allah! I will continue to beg Allah for forgiveness on your behalf (O Abu Taalib,) so long as I am not prevented by Allah Ta‘ala (i.e. so long as Allah Ta‘ala does not prohibit me from seeking forgiveness on your behalf, I will continue to beg Allah Ta‘ala to forgive you).” (Saheeh Bukhaari #4675)
It was on that occasion that Allah Ta‘ala revealed the following verses of the Qur’aan Majeed:
_It is not (permissible) for the Nabi and the believers to seek forgiveness for the mushrikeen (polytheists), even if they are family relatives, after it became clear to them that they are the people of hell. (Surah Taubah v. 113)_

*Writing Durood when writing the Blessed name of Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)*

_Hazrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “Whoever sends Durood upon me through writing the Durood in a kitaab, the angels continue seeking forgiveness on his behalf as long as my name remains in that kitaab.”_
*Happiness of Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu)*
Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) once said to Hazrat Abbaas (radhiyallahu ‘anhu)[the uncle of Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)], “I was more pleased with your Islam than the Islam of my father, as your Islam brought more happiness to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) than the Islam of my father.” (Sharhu Ma’anil Aathaar 3/321)

*The Generosity of Hazrat Mu’aaz bin Jabal (radhiyallahu ‘anhu)*
On one occasion, Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) sent four hundred gold coins to Hazrat Abu ‘Ubaidah bin Jarraah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and instructed the messenger to remain behind a little while and see what he does with the wealth.
When Hazrat Abu Ubaydah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) received the wealth, he said, “May Allah have mercy on him (referring to Hazrat Umar).”
He then said to his slave girl, “Take these seven gold coins to that person, and these five to that person.” In this manner, he distributed the entire sum of wealth. The slave returned and informed Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu).
Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) then sent the same amount of wealth to Hazrat Mu’aaz bin Jabal (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and he gave the messenger the same instruction.
Upon receiving the wealth, Hazrat Mu’aaz bin Jabal (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) said, “May Allah have mercy on him (referring to Hazrat Umar).”
Hazrat Mu’aaz (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) also distributed all the wealth besides two dinaars which his wife requested him to use to purchase somethings which they needed. When the messenger informed Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) of his actions, Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was greatly pleased and remarked, “They are brothers alike in doing good works.”

*Sale of a Person in Financial Constraints*
*Q:* What is the ruling of Shari’ah in regard to a person who is in financial constraints and people (e.g. his creditors) take advantage of his situation? They are well aware that due to his situation, if they offer him an extremely low price for his goods, he will accept due to his desperation and sell it to them. An item worth R50 will easily be sold to them for R5. Is it permissible for them to ‘squeeze’ him in this manner, due to which they will get much more money from him than he actually owes them?
*A:* Islam is a religion of mercy and compassion. The commands of dealing with mercy and compassion are not confined to the believers but also apply when dealing with the kuffaar. Nay, the laws of compassion and kindness even extend to dealing with the animal kingdom. Islam is second to none in showing kindness and compassion.
Hence, we are commanded to assist people who are in difficulty and seek ways to remove their difficulty. Taking advantage of the debtor by paying him a pittance is oppressing him and causing him further grief. It is certainly not becoming of a Muslim to deal with any person in this manner.
Therefore, even though the transaction will take place, as an offer and acceptance is apparently found with mutual consent, since the person is unhappy and is being compelled due to the circumstance to sell for such a low price, such a transaction will be faasid (invalid). The sale should be renewed and the person should at least be paid the market value of the goods.
And Allah Ta'ala knows best.
