•• Remember •• Heparin is an anticoagulant drug. This means that is slows down blood clotting or “thins” the blood. •• There are various types of heparin – the type we usually use is a Low Molecular Weight Heparin (LMWH) such as Enoxaparin (also known as Clexane) or Dalteparin. •• enous thrombosis is a condition in which a blood clot (thrombus) forms in a vein (venous thrombosis). Most commonly, venous thrombosis occurs in the “deep veins” in the legs, thighs or pelvis and this is called a deep vein thrombosis or a DVT. A DVT can limit blood flow through the vein, causing swelling and pain, but there is a risk that it can break off and travel through the blood stream. This is called an embolus. If the embolus lodges in the lung this is known as a pulmonary embolus (PE). A PE may cause breathing problems, chest pain and coughing up blood but a large PE can cause collapse and may be life threatening. •• However, the risk of developing a pulmonary embolus, once a DVT has been diagnosed and treated, is extremely small During pregnancy and the immediate period after birth, the risk of venous thrombosis is increased. #obs_gyne

•• Remember •• Methotrexate was used to induce abortions and is currently used to treat ectopic pregnancies (pregnancies that grow outside the uterus). Methotrexate has known teratogenic effects when received by a woman during the first trimester of pregnancy, •• Methotrexate is not recommended in pregnancy, as it can cause birth defects. #obs_gyne

•• Remember Oxytocin is indicated and approved by the FDA for two specific time frames in the obstetric : 1️⃣antepartum and 2️⃣postpartum. •• In the antepartum period, exogenous oxytocin is FDA-approved for strengthening uterine contractions with the aim of successful vaginal delivery of the fetus. •• Postpartum, oxytocin is FDA-approved when it is time to deliver the placenta during the third stage of labor and control postpartum hemorrhage. // Oxytocin is in a class of medications called oxytocic hormones. It works by stimulating uterine contractions. #obs_gyne

•• Remember → In patients with antepartum hemorrhage, avoid ❌ digital vaginal examination unless placenta previa has been ruled out on transvaginal ultrasound. #obs_gyne

⏯ The causes of postpartum hemorrhage are the 4 T's: 1⃣Tone (uterine atony). 2⃣Trauma (e.g., laceration, uterine inversion). 3⃣Tissue (retained placenta). 4⃣Thrombin (bleeding diathesis). #obs_gyne
