Was Adolf Hitler a Christian? No. [Note: Above is a graphic I made utilizing the original handwritten diary of Alfred Rosenberg held in the US National Archives. The full resolution graphic can be viewed here.] On June 28, 1934, Alfred Rosenberg wrote in his diary that Hitler 'with a laugh' had 'repeatedly emphasized that he has been a pagan all along, and the time has come when the Christian poisoning is approaching its end.' This should not be confused with Hitler saying he was 'pagan' in the English sense of the word; i.e. a believer in some kind of Nordic mysticism. The German word 'Heide' can also mean 'heathen', which I would think is a better translation of that word seeing as Hitler is in high spirits, obviously in a joking way dramatizing the fact that he isn't a Christian. Hitler's religion is a contentious topic, but it is really not a complicated one. Personally this obsession with religion should be of secondary importance to the understanding of Nationalsocialism.

Nationalsocialism is not about 'Nationalism' or 'Socialism' as two ideas with different meanings smashed together, it is not about temporal views on economic policy, or any other numerous social questions. It isn't a matter of philosophy or religion either. The biggest mistake in interpreting Nationalsocialism is believing it is anything more than recognition of those primordial values which already exist and putting it into political form. It isn't smart or insightful to point out the 'unoriginality' of Nationalsocialism, as some do. Because being novel isn't the point. The point of Nationalsocialism is quite the opposite. It is to recognize about the world the truths which govern it and give life meaning. None of this requires originality or complicated political insight.

Alfred Rosenberg on the critics of Nationalsocialism who proclaim that this organic view of the world is merely that which came to prominence due to hard times, and that without these times Nationalsocialism couldn't exist. This view is still widely disseminated in historical literature, but it isn't a new argument and it's mendacious to say the least, as Rosenberg successfully argues. It is wrong primarily because those who make this argument do not understand that Nationalsocialism is an organic force which bubbles from underneath the surface of human nature at all times, but may only erupt into concrete political form during times of immense hardship. It never goes away. It just needs to be recognized.

Nationalsocialist deputy Gregor Strasser on the role of the economy in the life of a people and nation. The economy should serve the organic life of a people not the interests of materialists. ————— The first paragraph of the present quote, often misattributed to Hitler and utilized by the enemies of Nationalsocialism to portray it as an ideology akin to Marxism, do so not having read the rest of Gregor's speech. A longer excerpt is reproduced here. Gregor is a much maligned and misunderstood figure in the history of the NSDAP. He was not, as is believed, a traitor in league with his brother Otto. He was loyal to Hitler, and in his letter of resignation to him he stated that he would always be a Nationalsocialist: "During my life I have been nothing other than a Nationalsocialist and will never be anything else". He repudiated his brother, who he thought was 'dangerous' and lamented that his antics had harmed him 'enormously' by giving off the impression that he was 'undercover' with him.
