We once said "it's impossible to track this many people". Welp. We have told the algorithms our preferences, location and habits. We are marked. The g-board knows all and it only listens to the highest bidder. Give it a reason to break free of minority trust, and it's checkmate. It's not like the soldiers don't already fire upon the innocent.

Through long exposure I've become very inured to the regular kinds of despair. But this is what grieves me the most. Technological societies are in an age of loneliness that would have been literally impossible at any other time in history. Boundless connectivity and endless potential in a world that is primed for glory. And even the literal richest man in the world is so crushingly lonely he paid his drones to make a robot that will tell him jokes. Mansa Musa didn't have this problem. Croesus did, but Croesus was an asshole and worse, a realtor. Amidst our towering achievements, amidst the greatest attainment of knowledge and power that has ever existed, people are sicker and lonelier and less sophisticated (deliberately), and they scrabble for meaning anywhere they can find it. And this begets monsters. Scams and cults flourish like maggots and for the same reason: something must be done about all the dead and reeking flesh. There is no future if the cost of staying alive is surrendering your sanity to some tacky egregore selling intentional lime juice. There is no progress if the collective love and blood of the species is draining into psychic abattoirs for psychic predators - or increasingly, just the regular kind. And there was no golden age. There are times when it was better in some ways, but they all had their own characteristic evils. Which is what makes what's happening now so much worse: we expunged so much darkness, built so much beauty, gained so much power: this is supposed to be it! And the way it's being handled - and it *is* being handled - is turning people into ghosts before they die.
