π Dhatura and its Toxicity
β’ Commonly known as Indian thornapple/Devil's trumpet or Angel's trumpet.
β’ All parts of datura plants are poisonous but the seeds & fruits are considered to be the most noxious.
β’ The principal toxic elements are tropane alkaloids.
β’ Ingesting even a single leaf can lead to severe side effects.
β’ Hence for therapeutic purposes, it has to be purified.
β Purification of datura
β’ Datura seeds are tied in a pottali.
β’ This pottali is boiled with cow milk in a dolayantra for three hours.
β’ Then pottali is opened and datura seeds are washed with hot water.
β’ These pure datura seeds are then used in the formulations.

β’ A person if poisoned by Dhatura, visual perceptions would all become yellowish
β’ Kampa (Tremors)
β’ Laala (Excessive Salivation)
β’ Mada (Intoxication)
β’ Chardi (Vomiting)
β’ Smruthibhramsha (Amnesia)
β’ Bhrama (Giddiness)
π° Toxicity Symptoms of Dhatura poisoning:9Dβs
" Blind as a bat, hot as a hare, dry as a bone, red as a beef, and mad as a wet hen"
1. Dryness of mouth & throat
2. Difficulty in talking
3. Dysphagia
4. Dilatation of cutaneous blood vessels
5. Dilatation of pupils
6. Dry hot skin
7. Drunken gait
8. Delirium
9. Drowsiness
β’ Dryness of mouth & throat due to inhibition of saliva [dry as a bone]
β’ Difficulty in talking, dysphagia, thirst.
β’ Face get flushed due to dilatation of cutaneous blood vessels [red as a beef].
β’ Body temperature gets raised, and skin is dry & hot due to inhibition of sweat secretion &stimulation of the heat-regulating center [hot as a hare].
β’ Pulse becomes rapid.
β’ Respiration increased.
β’ Patient becomes confused,giddy, staggers as if drunk & later becomes delirious [mad as a wet hen]
π Fatal dose
β’100-125Seeds/60mg for adults.
β’4 mg for children of atropine.
π Fatal period: 24 hours
