They said, "Call upon your Lord to make clear to us what it is. Indeed, the cows seem alike to us, and indeed, God willing, we will be guided." (Surat Al-Baqarah: 70)
Then they persisted in their stubbornness, saying, "Call upon your Lord to make clear to us what it is. Indeed, the cows seem alike to us, and indeed, God willing, we will be guided."

Al-Baqarah

Al-Baqarah
And when Moses said to his people, "God commands you to slaughter a cow," they said, "Do you take us in mockery?" He said, "I seek refuge in God from being among the ignorant." Verse 67
{And when Moses said to his people, "God commands you to slaughter a cow," they said, "Do you take us in mockery?" He said, "I seek refuge in God from being among the ignorant."}
[Surat Al-Baqarah: 67]
- Brief Explanation:
And remember from the story of your ancestors what happened between them and Moses, when he informed them of God's command to slaughter a cow from among the cows. Instead of rushing to do so, they said, stubbornly, "Do you make us an object of mockery?!" Moses said: I seek refuge in God from being among those who lie about God and mock people.

So We made it a deterrent to those before it and those after it, and an instruction for the righteous. Verse 66
{So We made it a deterrent to those before it and those after it, and an instruction for the righteous.}
[Surat Al-Baqarah: 66]
- Brief Explanation:
So We made this transgressing town an example for the towns that were next to it, and an example for those who come after it, so that they would not follow its example and deserve its punishment. And We made it a reminder for the righteous who fear Allah's punishment and vengeance against those who transgress His limits.

{ فَجَعَلْنَاهَا نَكَالًا لِمَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهَا وَمَا خَلْفَهَا وَمَوْعِظَةً لِلْمُتَّقِينَ }

And you certainly knew those among you who transgressed on the Sabbath, so We said to them, "Be apes, despised."
[Surat Al-Baqarah: 65]
- Explanation of the Brief:
And you certainly knew the story of your ancestors, with unmistakable knowledge; they transgressed by hunting on the Sabbath, on which hunting was forbidden. They resorted to a trick by setting nets before the Sabbath and pulling them out on Sunday. So God made these treacherous people into outcast apes as a punishment for their trickery.

{ وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ الَّذِينَ اعْتَدَوْا مِنْكُمْ فِي السَّبْتِ فَقُلْنَا لَهُمْ كُونُوا قِرَدَةً خَاسِئِينَ }
Al-Baqarah
Then you turned away after that. Had it not been for the grace of Allah upon you and His mercy, you would have been among the losers. Verse 64
{Then you turned away after that. Had it not been for the grace of Allah upon you and His mercy, you would have been among the losers.}
[Surat Al-Baqarah: 64]
- Brief Explanation:
So you had no choice but to turn away and disobey after the firm covenant had been taken from you. And had it not been for the grace of Allah upon you by overlooking your transgressions and His mercy by accepting your repentance, you would have been among the losers because of that turning away and disobedience.
Al-Baqara

{ ثُمَّ تَوَلَّيْتُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ ذَلِكَ فَلَوْلَا فَضْلُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَتُهُ لَكُنْتُمْ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ }
Al-Baqarah
And [mention] when We took your covenant and raised the mountain above you, [saying], "Take what We have given you with strength and remember what is in it that you may become righteous." [Surat Al-Baqarah: 63]
And remember what We took from you of the firm covenant of belief in God and His Messengers. We raised the mountain above you to frighten you and warn you against abandoning the covenant. We said to you, "Take what We have revealed to you of the Torah with diligence and effort, without laziness or laziness, and memorize what is in it and reflect upon it." Perhaps by doing so you will avoid the punishment of God Almighty.

Al-Baqara
{ إِنَّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَالَّذِينَ هَادُوا وَالنَّصَارَى وَالصَّابِئِينَ مَنْ آمَنَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحًا فَلَهُمْ أَجْرُهُمْ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْ وَلَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ }

Al-Baqarah
And when you said, "O Moses, we will never be patient with one kind of food, so call upon your Lord to bring forth for us from what the earth grows of its herbs, its cucumbers, its garlic, its lentils, and its onions." He said, "Would you exchange that which is better for that which is lesser? Go down to Mudar, for you shall have what you asked for." And humiliation and poverty were imposed upon them, and they incurred wrath from Allah. That was because they disbelieved in the signs of Allah and killed the prophets without right. That was because they disobeyed and were transgressors. Verse 61
{And when you said, "O Moses, we will never be patient with one kind of food, so call upon your Lord to bring forth for us from what the earth grows of its herbs, its cucumbers, its garlic, its lentils, And its onion. He said, "Would you exchange that which is better for that which is lesser? Go down to Egypt, for indeed, you shall have what you asked for." And humiliation and poverty were stamped upon them, and they incurred the wrath of Allah. That was because they disbelieved in the signs of Allah and killed the prophets without right. That was because they disobeyed and were transgressors.
[Surat Al-Baqarah: 61]
- Tafsir Summary:
And remember when you were ungrateful for the favor of your Lord and grew tired of eating the manna and quails that God had sent down to you, and you said, "We cannot endure one unchanging food." So you asked Moses, peace be upon him, to call upon God to bring forth for you food from the vegetation of the earth—its herbs, its vegetables, its cucumbers (similar to cucumbers but larger), its grains, its lentils, and its onions. Moses, peace be upon him, said, denouncing your request, "Would you exchange that which is lesser and inferior for manna and quails, which are better and more generous, and which used to come to you without effort or fatigue? Descend from this land to any town, and you will find what you asked for in its fields and markets." Following their whims and repeatedly turning away from what God had chosen for them, they were afflicted with humiliation, poverty, and misery. They returned in wrath from God for turning away from His religion, disbelieving in His signs, and unjustly and aggressively killing His prophets. All this was because they disobeyed God and transgressed His limits.

{ وَإِذْ قُلْتُمْ يَامُوسَى لَنْ نَصْبِرَ عَلَى طَعَامٍ وَاحِدٍ فَادْعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ يُخْرِجْ لَنَا مِمَّا تُنْبِتُ الْأَرْضُ مِنْ بَقْلِهَا وَقِثَّائِهَا وَفُومِهَا وَعَدَسِهَا وَبَصَلِهَا قَالَ أَتَسْتَبْدِلُونَ الَّذِي هُوَ أَدْنَى بِالَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ اهْبِطُوا مِصْرًا فَإِنَّ لَكُمْ مَا سَأَلْتُمْ وَضُرِبَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ الذِّلَّةُ وَالْمَسْكَنَةُ وَبَاءُوا بِغَضَبٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ ذَلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا يَكْفُرُونَ بِآيَاتِ اللَّهِ وَيَقْتُلُونَ النَّبِيِّينَ بِغَيْرِ الْحَقِّ ذَلِكَ بِمَا عَصَوْا وَكَانُوا يَعْتَدُونَ }
