🟢 Rising intra-BRICS trade is strengthening the case for developing a cross-border payments system that can facilitate trade while reducing dependence on the U.S. dollar.
📍 Key Trade Trends
🟢 BRICS countries accounted for about 25% of global merchandise exports in 2025.
🟢 China touched about $500 billion in trade with BRICS members in 2024.
🟢 Brazil, India, Indonesia, Russia and UAE have also recorded large increases in trade with fellow BRICS members.
🟢 In 2024, all BRICS members except China received more than 30% of their imports from other BRICS countries.
🟢 Iran depends on BRICS for over 65% of its imports, while Ethiopia depends on the bloc for nearly 45%.
📍 The Dollar Detour
🟢 At present, cross-border payments often involve correspondent banks.
🟢 Where countries lack direct correspondent relationships, transactions may pass through international banks and currencies such as the U.S. dollar.
🟢 This adds foreign-exchange margins and intermediary fees and can make payments slower.
🟢 Russia’s exclusion from SWIFT following sanctions highlighted the vulnerability associated with dependence on existing international payment infrastructure.
