High-Altitude Climate Research Station What: India’s first-ever “High-Altitude Climate Research Station” was inaugurated recently by the Ministry of Science and Technology at the higher hill reaches of Nathatop, Jammu & Kashmir

Why is it important?

• Because the Himalayas are very sensitive to climate change, and studying this area can help us understand how our environment is changing and how to protect it.

Who is working together on this?

It’s a team effort between: • Government of India (Science & Tech Ministry) • Government of Jammu & Kashmir (provided the land) • Central University of Jammu (scientists will do research) • Swiss National Science Foundation (providing expert support) This centre’s first set of measurements will be conducted under Indo-Swiss Joint Research Project ICE-CRUNCH. What is Project ICE-CRUNCH? • This is the first research project at the new station. • It’s a joint project between Indian scientists and researchers from ETH Zürich, Switzerland. • They will study tiny particles in the air (like ice-forming particles and cloud droplets) to understand how clouds and snow form in the North-Western Himalayas.

😢 Jallianwala Bagh Tragedy On April 13th 1919, a large crowd gathered peacefully at Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar, Punjab to protest the arrest of Dr. Satyapal & Dr. Saifuddin Kitchlew. Colonel Reginald Dyer, the Military Commander of Amritsar, surrounded the Bagh with his troops, closed the gates & gave order to shoot at the peaceful congregation. There was a massacre. Hundreds were killed & thousands wounded. This incident is known as the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
