The first diagram shows the overall structure of a wind turbine and the other one compares the cons and pros of different locations where wind turbines can be installed. Overall, it is a clever way of generating electricity using wind power and the system is run by a computer to work with maximum efficiency. The overall design of a turbine is simple. The machine is erected on a tall tower made of steel and has three long blades that are attached to a generator. The blades can be made from wood or fiberglass. The force of the wind turns the blades and the generator starts to produce electricity. For maximum efficiency, the tower is equipped with a sensor that identifies the speed and direction of wind and it is connected to a computer on the ground that controls the direction of a turbine so that it can always look at the wind direction. The wind turbine usually has an output of 1.5 megawatts. There are different variations of wind turbines. A smaller one, which produces around 100 kilowatts, can be installed for domestic use. The larger turbines are usually put up in secluded places such as on top of hills and near the shores. If installed at higher levels the turbine makes greater amount of energy due to high speed of the winds but it does not look good. When installed near the coast the energy output is lover, although it does not spoil the landscape.

The diagram illustrates the process of manufacturing instant noodles in a factory. The procedure is relatively straightforward, consisting of several stages, culminating in the production of ready-to-eat noodles. The process initiates with the transportation of flour from storage silos using a specialized truck. This flour is then transferred into a mixer where it is combined with water and oil, forming a dough. Following this, the dough is passed through rollers to flatten it into an extended sheet. In the subsequent stage, this sheet is sliced into small dough strips, which are then shaped into disc-like noodles. These noodle discs undergo a cooking process in oil and are subsequently dried for a certain period. After the drying stage, the noodles are ready to be packaged. They are placed into individual cup containers, accompanied by assorted vegetables and seasonings. In the final phase, each cup is labeled for identification and the top is sealed for preservation. The instant noodles are then ready for distribution and consumption. (164 words)

The table compares the amount of oil produced in four African countries between 2000 and 2004. In general, it is apparent that while Congo experienced a downward trend, oil production rose in the other countries, with Somalia showing the highest increase over the five-year period. Most notably, Nigeria was the country with the highest amount of oil produced in all years. In detail, the production of oil in Nigeria started at 2 million barrels in 2000 and was followed by a slight rise to 2,100,000 barrels in the next year. By contrast, the year 2002 saw a decline of 200,000 barrels, and then the figures went up sharply to 2,300,000 barrels at the end of the period covered. The production pattern in Somalia was similar to that of Nigeria, albeit noticeably lower. Having decreased from 8000 barrels in 2000 to 7000 barrels in 2001, the production figures had more than doubled by 2002 and continued to rise dramatically to 55,000 barrels until 2004. Congo, on the other hand, somewhat bucked the trend and went in the opposite direction. The amount of oil produced in 2000 was around 270,000 barrels, and this figure declined gradually to 200,000 until 2004. Chad did not start oil production until 2003, with the amount being just 15,000 barrels in that year. By 2004, its production figures had risen sharply to 50,000 barrels, which was the lowest amount among all the countries in question. #classwork #sample_answer @ieltsu

The line graph gives information about the number of closed retail outlets in comparison to those newly opened in one country in seven years’ period. Overall, both categories saw a downward trend with some fluctuations throughout the period and there was a greater decline in the number of new establishments as opposed to closures. At the beginning of the period, in 2011, about 8500 shops were opened, which was the highest number in the entire period. The following year saw a steep decline in new outlets, halving to around 4000. However, the numbers rose steadily in the next two years, reaching 6000 and returned to previous figure of 4000 in 2015. The figures remained unchanged until the year 2017 before dropping again by another 1000 shops to 3000 stores entering business in the final year. The figures for the retail shops going out of business had a different pattern throughout the period. In 2011, more than 6000 shops were closed and the numbers fluctuated between 6000 and 7000 in the next three years before plummeting to 600 closures in 2015, which was almost ten times less than the previous year. The year 2016 saw a sharp rise in numbers, with more than 5000 shops being closed in that year alone. The final two years experienced a little change, remaining at over 5000 stores closing their businesses.

The graph below shows the number of shops that closed and the number of new shops that opened in one country between 2011 and

Paraphrasing examples Here are my suggestions for the paraphrasing exercise that I gave you last Thursday. Notice that I try to keep my paraphrasing quite simple. consumer spending on five different products = the amount of money that people spent on five items the consumption of rice and pasta in three European countries = the amounts of rice and pasta that people in (name the countries) eat changes in the cost of renting a home between 2009 and 2019 = information about residential rental prices over a 10-year period the market share percentage of four UK electricity suppliers = the proportion of the UK electricity market served by (four names)

Collocations and phrases Here are some good collocations and phrases from the sample answer that I shared above. Remember: a collocation is a group of words that are often used (and work well) together e.g. increased significantly, export earnings, textile industry. a country's export earnings export revenues income from earnings from the highest earning exports it is noticeable that five product categories over the period shown the textile industry saw the most significant growth in rose from... to... which was an increase of reached a similar level went up by... to approximately... there was a ...% increase in rising from roughly... to... there was almost no change in the amount of money earned which remained at just over decline in income fell by ...% to...

Here's my band 9 sample answer: The bar chart and table give information about a country's export earnings from five groups of products in 2015 and 2016. It is noticeable that export revenues in all but one of the five product categories increased over the period shown. While petroleum products were the highest earning exports in both years, the textile industry saw the most significant growth in earnings. Export earnings from petroleum products rose from around $61 billion in 2015 to $63 billion in 2016, which was an increase of 3%. Income from engineered goods reached a similar level. The country’s export earnings from these goods went up by 8.5% to approximately $62 billion in 2016. From 2015 to 2016, there was a 15.24% increase in export revenue from textiles, with earnings rising from roughly $25 billion to over $30 billion. By contrast, there was almost no change in the amount of money earned from agricultural products, which remained at just over $30 billion. Finally, the only decline in income occurred in the gems and jewellery product group, where export earnings fell by around 5% to approximately $40 billion in 2016. #report

A student asked me for advice about describing future years. Let's do a simple exercise to practise this. Here's the original paragraph, with verbs in the past tense: In 1985, the average person travelled 3,199 miles by car, and this rose to 4,806 miles in the year 2000. The figures for miles travelled by train, long distance bus, taxi and other modes also increased from 1985 to 2000. Travel by taxi the most significant change, with more than a threefold increase from 13 miles per person per year in 1985 to 42 miles in 2000. Now let's write the same description as a future prediction: In 2025, it is predicted that the average person will travel 3,199 miles by car, and this will rise to 4,806 miles in the year 2030. The figures for miles travelled by train, long distance bus, taxi and other modes are also expected to increase from 2025 to 2030. Travel by taxi should see the most significant change, with a projected increase from 13 miles per person per year in 2025 to 42 miles in 2030.

the 'word choice' skill You might assume that mistakes affect only your grammar score. But some mistakes are vocabulary mistakes. For example: a spelling mistake a word formation mistake (e.g. incorrect formation of a past participle) a word choice mistake (e.g. inappropriate or unnatural use of a word) For me, word choice is the big one. If you want to be a good writer, even in your own language, word choice is the skill that you need to develop. Interestingly, we refer to the greatest writers, like Shakespeare, as 'wordsmiths' due to their mastery of word choice. So, the next time you're writing in English, try to imagine yourself as a 'wordsmith'. Think about the different vocabulary options that you have, and make word choice your priority as you write.

Easy verbs, difficult noun phrases One feature of many academic task 1 answers is this: the verbs that we use are often 'easy', but the noun phrases that we write are long and relatively difficult. Look at the following examples from last week's answer: Verbs are in italics. Noun phrases are underlined. The total number of miles travelled by English people using all modes of transport increased significantly. The figures for miles travelled by train, long distance bus, taxi and other modes also increased. There was a fall in the average distances for three forms of transport, namely walking, bicycle and local bus. We could represent these sentence structures like this: x increased significantly. x also increased. There was a fall in x. (x = noun / noun phrase) Have a look at your own task 1 answers. Can you find some 'easy' verbs and long noun phrases?
