The cosmic microwave background radiation is the "echo" of the Big Bang, and the oldest known radiation in the universe

One galactic year is time needed for solar system to complete one orbit around the galaxy, in our case we are talking about 225Γ’β‚¬β€œ250 million years.

There is a giant supercluster of galaxies in the direction of the constellations Perseus and Pegasus that is over a thousand million light-years long, and is the largest supercluster known. In 1989, astronomers found another structure that they dubbed the "Great Wall". It is a collection of galaxies some 500 million light-years long, 200 million light-years wide, and 15 million light-years thick.

Saturn's moon Titan has a surface covered with organic material and an atmosphere whose chemical composition harkens back to an early Earth. It also has a hydrological cycle similar to the one on Earth, though Titan's cycle depends on methane and ethane instead than water.

The heated plasma is trapped on the magnetic field around the planet Saturn. This magnetic field rotates at speeds of about 100 kilometers per second (200,000 mph).

Voyager 2 has flown over 6 billion km and is heading out of the solar system after passing close to Neptune in 1989.

The Andromeda galaxy has 14 known satellite galaxies.

The Sun is 400 times in diameter larger than the Moon but is 400 times further away from Earth making them appear the same size.

The 3 main types of telescopes are: refracting (uses lenses to form an image), reflecting (uses an arrangement of mirrors to form an image) and catadioptric (uses mirrors combined with lensesÒ€”either in front of the mirror or somewhere within the optical pathÒ€”to form an image).

The concept of black holes goes back to the 1780's when "dark stars" were envisioned.

The Milky Way belongs to a cluster of 30 galaxies called the Local Group, which is 7 million light years across.

The nearest known black hole is 1,600 light years (10 quadrillion miles/16 quadrillion kilometers) away.

The origin of gold on our planet is believed to be the result of a bombardment by meteorites which occurred more than 200 million years after Earth was formed.

The Hubble was originally planned to go into the orbit in 1983 but the launching was delayed because of technical problems and lack of funds.

When two white dwarfs merge, their combined mass can exceed beyond a tipping point, leading to a supernova-like explosion.

The star Alpha Herculis is twenty five times larger than the circumference described by the earth's revolution around the sun. This means that twenty five diameters of our solar orbit would have to be placed end to end to equal the diameter of this Star.

If you flew in a jumbo jet (at normal cruise speed) for 24 hours each day then you could reach the Sun in about 19 years.

Robert Goddard launched the very first liquid-fuel rocket in 1926.
