UPDATES [from a Ph.d student in U of Chicago] NEGAR MORTAZAVI TALK I just talk to Laresa Lund at UChicago They were surprised by the number of calls and emails they have received from Iranians and the university is now very much informed and alert about the situation and our demands. 1. Negar Mortazavi was invited by Rana Ayyub, a fellow at the university and they were not sure if she has done enough background check on Negar or she has invited her purposefully. If you want to express your objections to this event, contact Rana. (Email ashleyjorn@uchicago.edu) 2. I raised this point that a lecture is not a fair format and the least they can do is to hold a debate. But it seems that at this point it is very unlikely for the university to cancel this event or change its format. 3. The capacity of the venue that holds this event is 70 people and they will check UChicago ids before letting you enter. But they are considering moving the event to a larger space. You can call the institute and give them your email address so that they can let you know if they manage to get a larger space. 4. I told them that we expect them to address and acknowledge the concerns of people about the speaker at the beginning of the event. 5. I asked them to extend the time of the event to have at least one hour for Q&A. 6. You can speak up and ask your questions. But if you cannot be in the lecture hall you can submit your questions anonymously to Laresa lklund@uchicago.edu prior to the event. Please make sure that you mention “Question” in the subject of your email. 7. We are free to have a rally, chant and bring posters and gather outside the institute. The university security will be there to help us. 8. I also warned them about the impacts of this event on the reputation of the institute. Also I mentioned the recent speech by Barak Obama (one of the founders and idols of the institute) that he was advised badly during the green movement not to support the people of Iran. It seems that they are concerned about this too, so they will cooperate with us. 9. They will try to put me in contact with the main organizer, Rana Ayyub as well. I’ll update you if I managed to talk to her.

متن نامه به صورت جداگانه: To Whom It May Concern, I am writing to apprise you of a piece of information that should be considered carefully, especially at this pivotal moment, directly related to the upcoming conversation at the University of Chicago, Institute of Politics, with a Washington-based Iranian-American journalist Negar Mortazavi. Negar Mortazavi is a member of the NIAC Council, whose primary responsibility is to normalize the situation between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran. While this is not a task to condemn or censure, for that matter, there is a more profound implication for it. NIAC is comprised of educated Iranian Americans that, on the surface, are establishing a rapport between the United States and Iran. However, when examining carefully what its members have been writing, promoting, or encouraging, it becomes crystal clear that their primary responsibility is to make excuses on behalf of the Iranian regime to continue its aggression and violent and irresponsible behaviour toward Iranians and other nations. For millions of Iranians outside and inside of Iran, NIAC is synonymous with the Islamic Republic of Iran outside its borders, with an outward appearance sugar-coated with Human Rights, Civil Rights, and Peace and Diplomacy. NIAC is the Islamic Republic of Iran in the United States. Those working for NIAC do not represent Iranians; they represent the short-term and long-term interests of the Iranian regime. Although Negar Mortazavi is a knowledgeable, intelligent, well-spoken, and educated person whose accomplishments require no further explanations, she is a NIAC member whose responsibilities have been explained above. If you watch the video attached below, you can recognize that she has usually tried to support the regime’s propaganda. Negar Mortazavi is an apologist for the Islamic Republic of Iran for millions of Iranians inside and outside Iran. Please do not invite the Iranian regime’s apologists to discuss the situation inside Iran. It is like a kick in the face of millions of Iranians to see a regime’s apologist invited to the University of Chicago, Institute of Politics. At such a pivotal moment when tens of Iranians are murdered on the streets, inviting Negar Mortazavi (a regime’s apologist) is coterminous with spitting on their graves. In the end, it is your choice what decision you will make. But hopefully, your decision will not break Iranians’ hearts and will be based on your independent search for the truth about Negar and the Council of which she is a member. Yours sincerely, P.S.
