Today, I attended the Ethiopian Association of Civil Engineers’ 27th Convention and International Infrastructure Conference 2026 at the Sheraton Addis Hotel in Addis Ababa, where I had the honour of addressing delegates and declaring the conference open. The theme, “Building Africa 2050: Engineering Resilient, Sustainable, and Smart Infrastructure,” speaks directly to the choices before our continent. As Africa’s population and cities grow, we must plan infrastructure that can withstand climate shocks, serve communities reliably and remain useful for generations. Drawing from Nigeria’s experience, I spoke about the different engineering demands of our coastal wetlands, river basins, erosion-prone communities and arid regions. I also highlighted the need to plan projects around local conditions, provide for maintenance from the outset and use digital tools to improve design, delivery and monitoring. Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, Nigeria is advancing infrastructure, energy security and sustainable development together. At the Ministry of Regional Development, we are working to align the development commissions’ projects with national priorities, strengthen project preparation and monitoring, and ensure that interventions reflect the needs of the communities they serve. I called for deeper cooperation among African governments, engineers, universities and industry. Connected transport and power systems, stronger local manufacturing and shared professional standards will be essential to the Africa we want to build by 2050. Our measure of success must be practical: whether a farmer can reach a market after heavy rain, whether a road remains safe as the climate changes, and whether reliable infrastructure expands opportunity for our people. I thank the Ethiopian Association of Civil Engineers for the invitation and for bringing professionals together around this important task. Engr. Abubakar Momoh, FNSE Honourable Minister of Regional Development https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1HQ5G38bpf/
