The Soviets considered the hill a symbol of hostility against their rule, thus crosses were burnt, destroyed, or used as scrap metal. The hill itself was even bulldozed.
Lithuanians secretly continued placing crosses on the now guarded hill. The crosses were destroyed several times, returning in the night by brave and god fearing Lithuanians who continued to visit the hill in the dark of night, with new crosses appearing each day in defiance of communist godless tyranny.
