'On this episode, I'll be highlighting some of the curious parallels between the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, recorded exclusively by Luke, and the raising of Lazarus from the dead, as narrated exclusively by John. Since both texts involve a man named Lazarus, as well as the subject of resurrection, it's worth considering that these two stories may in fact be related. Let's begin this exploration with the account recorded in John chapter 11.' [https://netbible.org/bible/John+11] 'These verses raise a few questions. Why does John introduce Lazarus, a man who was later raised from the dead, by way of his two sisters, Mary and Martha? If this miracle really happened, wouldn't Lazarus be famous? If so, why would he be introduced this way? Curiously, his sisters haven't been introduced yet in John's narrative, but for some reason, John seems to assume that they were known to his readers. Across the decades, various liberal critics have argued that John essentially invented the story of Lazarus for dramatic effect. Had a resurrection really transpired, they say, surely this fact would have been mentioned in one or two of the other Gospels, particularly in light of the weight that John places on the scene in his narrative. According to John 12, it was this miracle that was ultimately responsible for the large crowd that gathered to see Jesus during his triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Cambridge scholar Richard Bauckham rejects the suggestion that the story of Lazarus is a fabrication and highlights an important clue found in John 12.10. Since so many people had come to believe in Jesus as a result of the resurrection of Lazarus, John tells us that the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well. According to Bauckham, Lazarus therefore would have needed protective anonymity in a passion narrative originating in Jerusalem in the 40s. I asked Dr. Bauckham to discuss this concept of protective anonymity during one of the interviews I recorded with him a few years back. The idea of protective anonymity is that in the early period, say in the 40s, the people who put Jesus to death - Caiaphas and his cronies - were powerful people in Jerusalem.' [Bauckham] 'And in fact, the same family was responsible for the death of Jesus' brother James in the year 62, as Josephus tells us. So it was dangerous to be known as someone who had played some of these roles. And so it's protective in the sense that they're not being explicitly identified.' Praise, my soul, the King of heaven, to his feet thy tribute bring; ransomed healed, restored, forgiven, who like me his praise should sing? Praise him, praise him, praise the everlasting King. Praise him for his grace and favour to our fathers in distress; praise him still the same for ever, slow to chide and swift to bless: Praise him, praise him, glorious in his faithfulness. Father-like, he tends and spares us, well our feeble frame he knows; in his hands he gently bears us, rescues us from all our foes: Praise him, praise him, widely as his mercy flows. Frail as summer's flower we flourish; blows the wind and it is gone; but, while mortals rise and perish, God endures unchanging on: Praise him, praise him, praise the high eternal One. Angels, help us to adore him; ye behold him face to face; sun and moon bow down before him, dwellers all in time and space: Praise him, praise him, praise with us the God of grace. Quick Take…Hantavirus Cruise Ship Weirdness On May 2nd it was reported to the World Health Organization that a “cluster” of passengers on the cruise ship MV Hondius had fallen ill with “severe respiratory illness”. As of May 4th, seven passengers had fallen ill, resulting in three deaths. Lab testing “confirmed” Hantavirus infection in two of the cases, the other five remained “suspected”. As of this morning, an eighth case – and third “confirmed” – has been reported. “Confirmed” is a tricky word here, because we’re talking PCR tests. We’re all painfully familiar with those. Hantaviruses allegedly asymptomatically infect rodents, and can spread…... Read full article ... https://off-guardian.org/2026/05/07/quick-take-hantavirus-cruise-ship-weirdness/

A sermon on Jeremiah 31:21 preached by Welsh minister Martyn Lloyd-Jones (1899-1981) on Sept. 27, 1959 https://www.mljtrust.org/sermons/old-testament/wandering-from-the-highway/

‘What is one’s response to the word of the Lord? Do they believe it and does His word draw them to confession of sin and repentance? In this sermon on Jeremiah 17:14–15 titled “The Unbeliever,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones exhorts the Christian to examine how they respond to the word of God. He elaborates that everyone in the whole world is divided by whether or not they respond in faith to the word of God. The non-Christian does not believe the word, but instead mocks, scoffs, and denies what it says. Dr. Lloyd-Jones shows that this was the reality for Jeremiah’s audience; they mocked the prophecies spoken by Jeremiah. Moreover, the same is true of unbelievers today. Dr. Lloyd-Jones expounds that people will scoff at the word of God until judgement day. However, the believer is cut to the heart by the word of God and confesses their sin. The Christian trusts the word of God and risks losing everything in obedience.’ Description of a sermon preached by Welsh minister Martyn Lloyd-Jones (1899-1981) The Unbeliever A sermon on Jeremiah 17:14-15 given on July 17th, 1955 https://www.mljtrust.org/sermons/old-testament/the-unbeliever/

'How does one know that they are a Christian? In this sermon on Jeremiah 17:14–15 titled “Healed From Sin,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones addresses the topic of assurance and provides tests of faith for believers to examine themselves. He elaborates that a Christian understands themselves to be not, primarily, a good person but instead a forgiven person. Moreover, the Christian knows that they do not merely do wrong things, but that the root of the issue is that they are diseased to the core and need more than moral reform in order to be free. In fact, what everyone needs is not behavioral change, but heart surgery. Additionally, they knows that they cannot do this surgery themselves; they need God to do the work in their heart. The Christian confesses that they are a sinner in need of a Savior. Therefore if one is a believer, then their only hope and boast are in God. The one who can fix the heart is the only one who is worthy of worship.'
