All Tangled Up
Age 14 to 18
This problem follows on from Twisting and Turning and More Twisting and Turning
In More Twisting and Turning, you were invited to find a strategy to reduce any fraction a/b to zero using only the operations Twist (x↦x+1) and Turn (x↦−1/x). In this problem, we will call these operations T for twist, and R for rotate (since 'turn' rather unhelpfully begins with a T too!).
To end up at 4/5, you can carry out the following sequence of operations: T,T,T,T,T,R,T which could be written more concisely as T^5 R T=4/5.
Can you find a sequence of operations that leads to 9/10?
What about 23/24?
Can you find a sequence of operations that gets from 0 to the fraction n/n+1?
Now try the following sequences:
T^2 R T
T^2 R T^2 R T
T^2 R T^2 R T^2 R T
What do you notice?
Can you find a way to reach 1/10?
Can you prove that the pattern will continue?
Can you find other patterns that lead to interesting fractions?
Can you prove that it is possible to start at zero and reach any fraction using only the operations T and R?

More Twisting and Turning
Age 11 to 16
This problem follows on from Twisting and Turning in which twisting has the effect of adding 1 and turning transforms any number into the negative of its reciprocal.
It would be nice to have a strategy for disentangling any tangled ropes...
I wonder if it is always possible to disentangle them...
Choose a fraction to start from.
From your chosen fraction, can you find a sequence of twists and turns that get you back to zero? Remember, twisting:
x↦x+1
and turning:
x↦−1/x
Perhaps you might like to start with a negative fraction containing a 2 as the denominator, such as: −5/2 or −17/2 or −23/2
Can you find a way to get back to zero?
Try to describe an efficient strategy for disentangling any fraction of the form
−n/2
How does this help you get back to zero from a positive fraction with 2 as the numerator, such as 2/7 or 2/15 or 2/32?
Next, you could consider ropes that have been tangled up and have left you with a negative fraction containing a 3 as the denominator
e.g: −5/3 or −17/3 or −23/3
Try to describe an efficient strategy for disentangling any fraction of the form
−n/3
and use this to suggest a strategy for disentangling any fraction of the form
3/n
Next, you could consider ropes that have been tangled up and have left you with negative fractions containing 4,5,6…as the denominator, or positive fractions containing 4,5,6… as the numerator.
Can you develop a strategy for disentangling any tangled ropes, irrespective of the fraction you have ended up with?

Twisting and Turning
Age 11 to 14
This problem introduces a trick that can be done with two skipping ropes. It was invented by the mathematician John Conway.
Imagine four people standing at the four corners of a square. Let's call the corners after the compass directions NW, NE, SE and SW. To begin, NE and NW each hold an end of one rope, and SE and SW each hold the end of another rope.
There are two operations that the people can perform, twisting and turning.
In a twist, the person standing at NE swaps places with the person standing at SE, with NE lifting the rope over SE as they swap.
In a turn, everyone moves clockwise one place - NE to SE, SE to SW, SW to NW and NW to NE.
At every stage, the 'tangle' in the ropes can be represented by a number. The initial untangled state is represented by 0.
Twisting has the effect of adding 1:
x↦x+1
Turning transforms any number into the negative of its reciprocal:
x↦−1/x
Take a look at this video to see an example of the ropes being tangled and untangled:
Twisting and Turning.mp4
Now that you understand how the two operations work, try this:
Starting at zero (with both ropes parallel), what would you end with after following this sequence of moves?
Twist, twist, twist, turn, twist, twist, twist, turn, twist, twist, twist, turn
Can you work out a sequence of moves that will take you back to zero?
You may find it easier to call the turning move "Rotate" so that you can abbreviate the operations as T and R.
