Hiroshi Motoyama found on electroencephalograms that the brain waves of biocurrents during the practice of pho-wa are fundamentally different from those observed in yogis practicing other types of meditation. Studies have shown that when practicing pho-wa, a certain part of the brain - the hypothalamus - is stimulated, and normal thinking activity is stopped. Subjective signs of successful practice of pho-wa consist of itching on the top of the head, headaches, the appearance of clear fluid, swelling, or softening of the tissues around the fontanel area. The most reliable sign of success is the appearance of a small hole on the top of the head.
