Producer Rick Rubin suggested that Serj randomly select a book from the shelf (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1P__qjVB9Tc), open it to any page, and use the first phrase he saw. This resulted in the addition of the phrase "Father, into your hands. Why have you forsaken me?". The line "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit" is a quote from the Bible (Luke 23: 46 and Psalm 31:5), symbolizing Jesus Christ's trust in God as his last words on the cross. The lyrics "Why have you forsaken me? In your eyes, forsaken me? In your thoughts, forsaken me? The lyrics "I cry when angels deserve to die" suggest that those who knowingly harm themselves can be viewed as more righteous than those who judge others without practicing compassion.
