My strategy for chemistry Background - I have been a Chemistry faculty (teacher) for IIT JEE and NEET students for four years, so my basics are clear in all 3 parts. Sources- 1.RK SINGH sir notes + 2. previous 5 years UPSC papers + their solution( given by Sir) + 3.assignment for topic wise coverage of PYQ( some solutions given + some i made myself) + some standard questions ( some of them are repeated in actual exam) + 4. 2 years of test series for comprehensive coverage of syllabus as well as questions. 5. I don't have any other extra book.(No PSP, KL KAPOOR OR OTHER BOOK) PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY 1. Look for low hanging fruits ( gaseous state, solid state, liquid state , surface chemistry, phase equilibrium etc.) 2. For numericals - start by deriving the formula, it will fetch you 7 out of 10 or 8 out of 10, if presentation is good. 3. In topics such as chemical kinetics, for any order reaction, plot graphs. 4. For electrochemistry Nernst equation , electrochemical cell is low hanging fruit. 5. Observe PYQ carefully, for physical chemistry themes are repeated. 6. Look for toppers answer booklet, how they have written. I did the same thing and my marks improved from 224 to 265 (+41 addition). 7. In part test , it is possible to do all the things( assignment+ PYQ etc) so before giving part test prepare chemistry atleast for 2-3 full days and then write the test. I will share detailed chapter wise strategy as well as for inorganic and organic. Hope this will work for part test 1 and 2. If there are any extra points , i will try to add. Strategy for organic PYQ, Test series , Test in time etc remain same Low hanging fruits Photochemistry - maximum time norrish 1 and norrish 2 is asked Pericyclic - con rotation disrotation is always asked. Spectroscopy - structure derivation, delta values, mass spectro. Read notes multiple times. Solve assignment given by sir Named reaction - basics of named reaction. What happens in a particular reaction. Basic mechanism only Reagents - LiAlaH4 is asked frequently. Basic function one should know. Reaction mechanism - backbone. Revise it multiple times. TCP and KCP is asked every year almost. Carbene and nitrene. Intermediate is important area Polymer 8-9 pages notes and you are done. Inorganic Coordination compound - Read 12th standard ka phle (basics), then higher level given in notes. Lanthanide and actinide - notes . General trend in magnetic moment , size etc. Baaki k liye selected notes provided by sir, such as transfer of oxygen. I read last year topper's inorganic booklet as well as made some of my own notes for DNA RNA FERRODOXIN RUBERODOXIN etc, rest covered in test series and i am done. So in reality, toppers answer booklet is very helpful in writing, presenting and improving our answers. Still , if any problem is there, i am here to help you. Good luck

Percentile scores and Legend used in Mains Stage Analysis

Optional Performance ——————————— The performance of optional subjects are similar to last year with Mathematics being an exception and high marks being awarded. But the days of 370 marks in Maths seems to be over. UPSC has tried to restrict the optional top marks in range of 300 +/- 10 Marks. Chemistry is also placed in this bracket which means there is no added advantage or disadvantage for choosing Chemistry as optional.

What makes you a topper at Mains Stage ———————————————————— Last year, I had analysed 57 marksheets available in telegram of rankers from 1 to 250 and made some observations //▪️Scoring top 10% Marks [darkest green shade] in any three papers out of seven takes you to the overall top 10% (<10 in Mains Rank) provided you do not fall below average in other papers - target : Peak in 3 , average in others ▪️Range of Marks is highest in optional paper 1 and 2 , then GS 4 and then essay in 2020 Mains - which means peaking in these papers will give a better boost than peaking in other papers. Now GS 4 is more of an anomaly here, earlier people used to score more in GS 3 or other paper - the point is that GS 1,2,3,4 peaking cannot be targeted as it depends upon UPSC Marking policy of that particular year - that leaves Essay and Optional, so target : Peak in Essay and Optional In a nutshell - you don't have to be in top 10% in all papers to reach final top 10% at Mains Stage, you need to do that in 3 papers at max to reach there. And peaking in Essay and Optional rewards you more than peaking in GS - So push in Optional and Essay , hold in GS - you will reach the top // Fortunately this time around , some gentleman named Asif Sir had compiled the excel and shared promptly which made things easy. The dataset used is from Rank 1 to 251 Observations : ▪️Top in 3 papers and average in rest and you will be still in top 10% [within 8 out of 81 marksheets] like last year ▪️Reinforcing the above statement, no one else tops in three papers after the top 8 (10% of available data set) ▪️Range of marks is still highest in optional papers and Essay. So if you peak in these you will be rewarded more ▪️Rank 1 Shruti Sharma topped in 4 papers [more than requirement of 3 as per analysis] and held on to good performance in other papers giving her the edge in mains stage. Her performance is more balanced than last year's mains topper Again the take away remains same as last year : Top in 3 papers and hold on in rest of papers to get into top 10%, Essay and optional paper rewards you more for becoming topper
