4'33": MUSIC REBORN Experimental Music Festival On August 29th, 1952, David Tudor, an American pianist, performed a piece by modernist composer John Cage titled 4'33" in which the score instructed musicians not to play any music. But it was never about the silence. The point of this piece was to allow ambient sounds and accidental noises to be heard in their fullness. This piece heralded the birth of a new era in music. The Absolute Zero of music (4'33" is 273 seconds - a reference to absolute zero at -273°C) gave all future composers a true freedom: absolutely blank canvas with the possibility to express their ideas through any sound they saw fit, unrestricted by traditional scores and instruments.
