Today, we remember the legendary Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, who passed away 69 years ago on this day. Kahlo is celebrated today for her art, but the mainstream media often overlooks the fact that she was also a communist. She expressed disdain for fascists, capitalists, and those she labeled as snobs. Kahlo is also remembered for her profound love for all of humanity. She fostered an identity for Mexican nationalists that embraced indigenous people, the LGBT+ community, and feminists. 👉 Join @theredstream

Watch NATO’s Secretary General show a blatant disregard for Ukrainian lives as he legitimizes NATO members sending cluster bombs to Ukraine, despite the fact that their unexploded bomblets will endanger Ukrainians for years to come, like landmines. Their use is banned by the Convention on Cluster Munitions, which the US has not signed. 👉 Join @theredstream

Have you seen this series of communist paintings by Mexico's most important painter, Frida Kahlo? Her self-portrait with Joseph Stalin may be glossed over by liberal whitewashing, but Kahlo's Communist legacy still shines through her commercialization. At an early age, Kahlo joined the Mexican Communist Party's youth group and officially entered the party in 1927. She fought in labor unions, secured Spanish communist refugees who fought in the civil war asylum in Mexico, and raised funds for Spanish Republicans fighting Franco. She worked for the cultural revival of Mexico by celebrating indigenous culture through her art. She also dismantled traditional expectations in her art by addressing taboo topics such as gender, bisexuality, disability, mental health, and more. Frida Kahlo had taken part, against medical advice, in a protest against the US invasion of the leftist government in Guatemala in 1954. During this time, she got pneumonia, from which she would not recover. 👉 Join @theredstream

Minnesota’s Cuban-American Pianist Returns to Havana

Cuban-American pianist Nachito Herrera has lived in the United States for 22 years, but he hasn’t forgotten his roots. Every year, he returns to his alma mater, Havana's National School of Music, to donate musical instruments to students affected by the U.S. embargo. “It’s a way of giving back to the country that made us who we are,” he said. #cuba #unitedstates #jazz #piano #havana #roots #embargo #musicschool
