Sunday Mass at the Our Lady of the Candle Church in Pernambuco, Brazil, 1821. This lithography, painted in 1837 by Dutch artist Johann Moritz Rugendas, shows us an interesting feat of the then-slave state of Brazil: masters and slaves are all sitting together in the same pews. According to Rugendas, it was the norm for slaves and their masters to interact as equals during Church services, to which he remarked that "whites and blacks are equal before the altar."
