When losing peace of mind is good Lessons that disturbed our peace of mind may well take us toward peace of the heart. Sometimes, we may value peace to such an extent that it may actually be depriving us of something bigger. We have our mind and beneath that we have our heart. Sometimes we need to lose our peace of mind, especially when we are pursuing something that is deeply important for us. And in that pursuit, we get peace of the heart because we get a deep fulfillment that matters much more than peace. For example, when a parent has a child, they lose peace of mind because of the child, but they get peace of the heart. The same applies whenever we do anything meaningful. So rather than dismissing things because they cost us our peace of mind, we need to evaluate things based on whether they provide peace for our heart. When people behave strangely
Just because some actions are inconsiderate does not necessarily mean that they are unwarranted or inappropriate. When someone behaves in a way that does not take into consideration the time, place and people around them, we may just dismiss that person as an ill-mannered person. However, it may be that they are going through something very serious at that time, and they need to express it at that particular time itself, even if that expression is disruptive. Therefore, rather than dismissing the inconsiderate to be unwarranted or ill-mannered or inappropriate, we need to be open to evaluate: “Why did this person behave in that way?” and thereafter come to a well-reasoned conclusion about their behaviour. Feeling unsettled: Good or bad? To be unsettled is unhealthy when we are living a life of values and purposes. But it is healthy when we are settling for complacency and lethargy. We all feel unsettled at times, and how we respond to such feelings depends on the state of our life overall. If we are living a life of value and purpose, and are just not making tangible progress because progress requires time, then we need to neglect that feeling of being unsettled and keep pushing onwards. But if we are living a life of complacency or lethargy or apathy, then that feeling of being unsettled can prompt us towards changing our life and making our life better. The secret of effective devotion Devotion is not just emotion, it is emotion expressed through dedicated action. Some people dismiss devotion as simply expressive and sometimes ineffective emotion. However, devotion is not just some emotion in the heart, it is the essence of relationship that encompasses our entire being. And that means that the emotion in the heart is expressed through dedicated action in the service of one’s beloved. That is what makes devotion not just internally transformative but also externally effective. Why people think we are disrespectful Just because something is obvious to us doesn’t mean that it has to be obvious to everyone else. To use the word ‘obviously’ can come off as insulting when the things that are obvious to us may not be obvious to others. There are times when we wonder why some people become angry with us when we think that we haven’t spoken anything objectionable. It may be that our words are not objectionable, but the assumptions behind those words are what make our tone and manner objectionable. Rather than belittling people, for not understanding our concerns, we need to be evaluating whether we are communicating those concerns in a way that others can understand. From: https://gitadaily.com/why-people-think-we-are-disrespectful/ Watch this content at: Why people think we are disrespectful https://youtube.com/shorts/_2C641C2Ctw 17.15 Austerity of speech consists in speaking words that are truthful, pleasing, beneficial, and not agitating to others, and also in regularly reciting Vedic literature. See beyond harsh language Just because we don’t endorse someone’s language doesn’t mean that we can’t empathize with their feelings. Sometimes some people express their concerns in language that may not be appropriate for certain settings. Many times [other] people just get dismayed or even disgusted with that language and don’t see beyond it to the substance of that person’s concerns. However, there are times when we need to be empathic enough, knowing that not everybody will articulate their concerns in the same way as we would articulate them. And if we can see beyond their words to their heart, that is when we have an opportunity to express deep empathy. Enthusiasm vs over-enthusiasm When we find that our enthusiasm is overriding our manners, that is when our enthusiasm is becoming over-enthusiasm. We all are enthusiastic about certain things; and our enthusiasm may be based on deep interests or deep concerns about certain issues. And when we try to persuade others who don’t share our enthusiasm, at such times, if we become ill-mannered towards those people because they don’t appreciate the things we are enthusiastic about, that is when we can know: this is a red sign indicating that we are becoming over-enthusiastic. Why relationships are so difficult Difficulties in relationships are caused not so much by INCOMPATIBILITY as by INFLEXIBILITY. Sometimes when two people cannot get along with each other, a common explanation for that is, “We are just incompatible.” The fact however is that no two people are perfectly compatible, and every relationship has its difficulties. The degree may be different, but difficulties are present in every relationship. And if we want to have healthy relationships, then rather than using the excuse of incompatibility to not work through our differences, we can look at a deeper cause: inflexibility. When we fail to or refuse to understand the other person and why some things matter to them, that inflexibility is what puts our relationships into a grave. Unnecessary inner baggage What some people considered to be essential luggage, others considered to be dispensable baggage. When we are traveling, we often pack a lot of things and others may tend to say, ‘You don’t really need this’ and we may think, ‘No, I absolutely need it’ What differences of opinion apply to our external baggage can also apply to the internal baggage that we carry in our minds. Sometimes there are certain memories of past words that we carry inside our head and replay, considering that this is what I need to remember to get back at the other person. But wise people may tell us this is dispensable baggage, that we need to just close that chapter and move on in our life without hurting ourselves by holding on to those hurtful memories. How to develop deep friendships To help someone in their moment of need is to be a friend and to make a friend for life. Sometimes we wonder: How can we develop more friends? The simplest ways to do that is to actually help someone when they are in need. Life puts even the best of people in difficulties. At such times, if someone extends a hand of help – not in an arrogant way where they are looking down at the object of help, but in a friendly respectful way – then that person is remembered favorably for a long time, possibly even for life. Thus helping others in need is a very easy and effective way to develop deep and abiding friendships. From: https://gitadaily.com/how-to-develop-deep-friendships/ Watch this content at: How to develop deep friendships https://gitadaily.com/how-to-develop-deep-friendships/ 16.14: The demoniac person thinks: “

When to forgive but not forget Suppose someone has done something hurtful. We may be told by others, just forgive and forget. And that is good advice if that person has really repented internally and reformed externally. However, till we come to know for sure whether that person has changed or not, it may be helpful to forgive in the sense of not holding a grudge against that person and not mentally replying constantly the wrong that they did to us. But it may also be helpful to not forget in the sense that we don’t make ourselves vulnerable to being similarly hurt by that person in the future. Why words hurt What some people consider friendly banter, others consider to be beastly torture. In this world, different people perceive things differently. And sometimes someone who might be a bully might torture someone else, even humiliate that person, and may think of it just as having some fun. They may think of that just as friendly banter, especially if it is emotional or verbal. But somebody else might experience it to be unbearable, intolerable, that might spiral off a violent reaction in them, either towards themselves, where they may even think of ending their own lives, or towards the other person, where they may react destructively wanting to eliminate the other person. That is why we need to understand how our actions are impacting others. Might we be narrow-minded? Narrow-mindedness means to think that what matters to us must matter to everyone else. Most of us, if asked, would not consider ourselves to be narrow-minded. However, narrow-mindedness means that within our way of looking at things, if we consider something to be important, then we expect everyone else to also consider those things to be important. And we don’t just expect that, we insist on that. And then we become angry with others if they don’t similarly give due importance to the things that matter to us. A more broad-minded approach is to actually explain why the things that matter to us matter to us, in ways that others can understand. From: https://gitadaily.com/might-we-be-narrow-minded/ Watch this content at: Might we be narrow-minded? https://youtube.com/shorts/1j4n0S30vKw 18.22 And that knowledge by which one is attached to one kind of work as the all in all, without knowledge of the truth, and which is very meager, is said to be in the mode of darkness. Two problems with forced compliance Maintaining discipline is not about crushing people who have opposite opinions, it is about communicating how we all have a shared interest that subordinates our various differences. Sometimes when we want to discipline someone, we may use our authority to try to crush them into compliance. Such an approach is neither sustainable in the long run because they will rebel, nor is it transformative because they will maintain resentment in the heart. More effective communication is when we give them a broader vision of why what we are telling then is in the shared interests of both of us. Why people see the same thing differently What some people consider as clarity of vision, others consider as lack of vision. The Bhagavad Gita talks about how our vision of the world is filtered through the three modes of material nature. The modes are subtle forces which can cause us to see the same thing differently. And thus a person in the mode of ignorance sees only what is immediately comfortable, whereas a person in the mode of goodness sees what is eventually beneficial. And therefore two such people may come to radically opposite conclusions based on the same event. One may consider that they have clarity of vision, whereas other may think that this person lacks vision completely. From: https://gitadaily.com/why-people-see-the-same-thing-differently/ Watch this content at: Why people see the same thing differently https://youtube.com/shorts/OgLFmP54fGI 14.05  Material nature consists of three modes – goodness, passion and ignorance. Why we fail in improving ourselves Why we often fail in our attempts at self-improvement is because we are tricked by our mind into aiming for instant improvement and then we are tripped by that same mind into falling and then beating ourselves up for not being strong enough. If somebody wants to go from the ground floor to the first floor, they just run and try to make a high jump, they are going to fall. If they take a staircase, they can naturally go up small steps, one step at a time. That’s what the Bhagavad Gita recommends Ć›anaiáž„ ƛanair uparamed. So when we try to improve ourselves, let’s focus on taking small steps that we feel confident about doing and in that way we all can improve. Watch this content at: Why we fail in improving ourselves https://youtube.com/shorts/WqpoYGxiYOg 06.25 Gradually, step by step, one should become situated in trance by means of intelligence sustained by full conviction, and thus the mind should be fixed on the Self alone and should think of nothing else. Does God come from our imagination God does not come from our imagination; our imagination comes from God, and it can take us to God as well as away from God. Some people have merely imagined certain beings as God. However, God is the source of everything, including those people and their power of imagination. Nothing can exist without God. God gives us the power of imagination so that we can think of things beyond our vision. If we use our imagination to perceive God, then our imagination can lead us toward Him. But if we use our imagination solely for fantasizing worldly pleasures, then it can take us away from Him. Miracles are not against science Miracles are not against science; they are above science. Every theistic tradition has accounts of miracles performed by God, wherein actions are done that seem impossible within the normal laws of nature. Many people dismiss these miracles as unscientific; however, they are trans-scientific. The laws of nature are accepted by God. In fact, they are sustained by Him. But He is not within them; He is above them. He makes those laws, and He can suspend those laws when He wants. When Krishna lifts Govardhan Hill, He suspends the law of gravity. He is above science, not against science. Lack of faith We worry not because we have too little faith in God, but because we have too much faith in our fears. Whenever we worry, especially when we are also trying to be devotees of God, then we may feel, “Oh, my faith is so weak that I am having this worry in spite of my devotion.” However, the problem is not that our faith is too weak. Rather, it is our faith is too strong, but it is also misdirected. We are having faith in our fears. Our fears don’t predict the future. No one knows the future. But when our fears start telling us this may go wrong and that may go wrong, when we believe those, we are having faith in our fears. We don’t need to increase our faith. We just need to redirect our faith from our fears to our Lord. Cheating is not cheating when I do it? When cheating is not cheating, cheating is cheating when you do it, but cheating is not cheating when I do it. Such is the mentality of the demoniac, of people whose intelligence has been perverted by the mode of ignorance. Such people have double standards: one standard that they apply to others and another standard that they apply to themselves. Such people may think that they can get away with doing anything wrong because they are powerful enough or they are clever enough. But ultimately, no one is above the law. The more we think that we are above the law, the more we will be crushed by the law. The law of karma is universal and infallible.
