| 2 | When a mother squirrel stumbles upon an orphaned baby, she doesn’t turn away.
She keeps watch, waiting patiently for three long days — giving the little one’s parents every chance to return. Only when she is certain the baby is truly alone does she act. She gathers it close, carries it to her nest, and makes it her own.
From that moment on, she nurses it, shields it from danger, and raises it beside her own kits, as if it had always belonged.
And the father? He too plays his part with quiet devotion. He returns carrying food, greets her with gentle nuzzles, and offers the biggest, sweetest nuts as his gift of love. Together, they are a team — fierce protectors, patient nurturers, silent gardeners of the forest.
Because squirrels do not only care for their families. They care for the woods themselves. Half of the seeds they bury are forgotten, sprouting into new trees and shrubs — new life, new shelter, new oxygen for us all.
Squirrels remind us that true love is patient. That family is not only blood, but also choice. And that even the smallest creatures already know the wisdom humans so often forget: love is shown in action, and it grows new life wherever it is practiced. | 138 |

| 4 | I wasn’t supposed to survive.
The sea took everything—my herd, my home, my mother. One moment I was nestled in warm muddy waters, and the next… adrift. A wave taller than the sky tossed me like a leaf, and for miles, I floated. Alone. Cold. Trembling with fear.
They brought me to a place called Haller Park. It smelled different. Quieter somehow. I didn’t know what I was looking for—only that my heart felt hollow and heavy, like the tide had taken it, too.
And then… her.
Mzee.
She wasn’t my kind. Not even close. She moved slowly, like time itself. Her eyes were deep and still. But something about her made my storm-battered heart rest. I followed her. Nudged her. Laid beside her. And she didn’t turn away.
She let me stay.
She taught me patience. How to breathe again. How to trust. She didn’t speak much—only with presence, with stillness. But every slow blink, every shared nap beneath the trees, told me: you are safe now.
They say we weren’t meant to be friends. But love, real love, doesn’t ask questions. It just shows up.
And sometimes, when the storm is over, it looks like an ancient tortoise with a heart big enough to carry a hippo who had lost everything. | 139 |

| 7 | No one at the sanctuary knew where the tiny elephant would choose to sleep after its rescue.
On the first night, the exhausted calf curled up alone beneath a warm blanket, still frightened by every unfamiliar sound. Caretakers checked on it quietly through the night, giving it space while making sure it felt safe.
The following morning, a rescued baby hippo wandered over, sniffed the new arrival, and refused to leave its side.
That afternoon, both youngsters settled onto the same bed of fresh hay.
Without a sound, the elephant rested its head against the hippo's shoulder, and the hippo stayed perfectly still, almost as if it understood exactly what its new friend needed.
From that day on, the two were rarely seen apart.
Their friendship didn't begin with play or excitement.
It began with quiet trust.
Sometimes the greatest comfort doesn't come from words or even from your own kind.
