8 FUN AND EFFECTIVE WAYS TO LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE OVER SUMMER VACATION (Part 2) 🌼 Listen to music Music is one of the most enjoyable gateways into a language. Search the world music sections, for instance, on Spotify to find artists you enjoy, and shuffle some of their songs into your summer playlist. Even if you don’t understand the lyrics of a song, just hearing the language will help you pick up on sounds and individual words. You may find yourself enjoying it so much that you want to look up the lyrics and learn more. 🌼 Subscribe to blogs Read language and culture blogs for grammar lessons, new vocabulary, and cultural insights. After all, what’s the point of learning a new language if you know nothing about the cultures in which it is used? Learning about traditions, travel destinations, and current events in your country of interest will keep you motivated on the language-learning front. 🌼 Use the buddy system Spending an unlimited amount of time with your friends is undoubtedly one of the best parts of summer. Work double duty and convince one of your friends to learn a language with you, so you can improve your skills together while tanning at the beach, baking cookies late at night, or doing whatever it is you feel like doing that day. Learning with a friend is motivating, holds you accountable, gives you someone to speak to and share resources with. 🌼 Take summer classes * If you have really lofty goals for your summer language-learning fiasco, working with a teacher will definitely give you a leg up. 8 FUN AND EFFECTIVE WAYS TO LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE OVER SUMMER VACATION (Part 1) 🌼 Learn on mobile Ideally, you should be studying for 30 minutes every single day. But let’s face it, summer is the time for traveling, visiting relatives, and doing whatever else you feel like doing. So what if you’re out and about and you don’t have your favorite language book or online course? Chances are, you’ll have your phone or tablet with you, for which I recommend Duolingo. 🌼 Change the language on your devices Now that your phone is your “BFF”, change the system language into the one you’re learning. While you’re at it, change over your social media accounts, too. At first it may feel strange, but over time, it will become second nature and you’ll pick up on a number of new tech-related words (like, share, send, delete, etc.). These tiny bits of exposure each time you pick up your phone or log on to social media accounts will keep your brain engaged and prompt you to begin thinking in the language more often. 🌼 Watch children's TV shows Scour YouTube for children’s shows in the language you’re learning. You may feel a little silly, but the vocabulary and language use will be simple – perfect for a beginner! The visual element will provide context and keep you engaged, and you just might find yourself invested in the plot. 🌼 Read comics and kid's stories Along the same vein, stories written for younger audiences are great resources for beginners in a language. The simple plot lends itself to simple vocabulary and shorter sentences, giving you a chance to walk before you run. #tips

If you’re in Paris, I suggest you visit a current beautiful exhibition Gallen-Kallela: Myths and Nature at the Musée Jacquemart-André. You’ll love it. Afterwards, you can enjoy a cup of tea with a delicious dessert in the marvellous museum’s café. Before you leave, take a round in the museum’s bookstore. I bought there such a good book called Sisu: The Finnish Art of Courage by Joanna Nylund. You’ll find in it wise words with wonderful illustrations and photos. I’ve been to Finland once and I’m excited to return there. Tips for Learning Two Languages at Once (Part II) 📚 Immerse yourself At the beginning, try studying for longer sessions (like a full 30 minutes of Dutch all at once) instead of breaking it up (like 15 minutes in the morning and 15 more in the evening). This gives you more time to get in "Dutch mode" or "Spanish mode" and really sink into the language. As you get more comfortable and more proficient, you might not need as much time to settle into each language. 🛋 Create different study contexts Especially at the beginning, try separating your languages by time and location. For example, you could make a habit of always studying Spanish in the morning in the kitchen and studying Dutch after dinner on the couch. This can also help you get in the "mode" of each language. As you get more proficient in the languages, you can try being less rigid about your study contexts. 🇪🇸🇳🇱 Use one to practice the other When you're feeling confident in one of your new languages, you might be ready to work on both languages at once. For example, make flashcards with words in the two languages (like one side Spanish, one side Dutch) and don't use your own language at all. You can color-code the words to help separate them. Once you fall in love with one language, you'll be itching to study more! When studying two or more languages at the same time, make sure to spend lots of time with each, to get that all-important language input. There's no limit to how many you can learn with enough practice! #tips

Tips for Learning Two Languages at Once (Part I) There are more than 7 100 languages in the world, and if you've studied one you might have had the realization that you could study another and another. But is it a good idea to study multiple languages at a time, or is it confusing? Does it make it harder to learn them well? Thankfully, your brain can definitely handle learning two (or more!) languages at once. Here are some ways you can make this linguistic task easier on yourself: 🕰 Double your study time For most adults, the real challenge of learning multiple languages at once is time. It's really important to get enough input in each language you study. If you were studying Spanish for 30 minutes a day and want to add Dutch to the mix, cutting 30 minutes in half typically means getting less input in each language. You might need to double the total time you study to get the same results in each language. ⚖️ Set reasonable expectations There will be pros and cons to studying any pair of languages together. If the new language is similar to one you already know or have been studying, you might get a hang of the basics pretty quickly – but it could be hard to keep two rather similar languages, like Spanish and Italian, apart. On the flip side, studying two unrelated languages, like Spanish and Japanese, might mean less confusion between words and rules, but there might be less you can "transfer" from one to the other. 👟 Give yourself a head start in one Consider studying just one language to start, until you have a solid foundation. Once you have a good command of basic vocabulary, grammar, and building sentences, then try adding another language. #tips

Don’t Make These 5 Language Learning Mistakes! 1. JUST USING AN APP An app might be great at vocabulary or reading, but it won’t be a complete study routine with a good mix of input and output. 2. NOT USING VOCABULARY FLASHCARDS If you don’t have a method to review the new words you learned in a straightforward way, you’ll just forget them. 3. RELYING ONLY ON TV/MOVIES This method may work for some people, but most need a mix of output and comprehensible input (not only content made for adult natives if you’re beginner) to make real progress. 4. USING COOKIE-CUTTER RESSOURCES Just because everyone else using Duolingo, Memorise and Hello Talk doesn’t mean it’ll work for you. Test different resources and find what works for you. 5. NOT USING A TUTOR FOR 1:1 LESSONS * Nothing beats a one-on-one lesson with a teacher.
