How Music Can Help You Learn a Language (Part II) 🎶 Next, pretend you’re going to karaoke When you really love a song or album, study it as if you were to perform at karaoke. Listen to the songs with the lyrics in front of you, skip back to catch the lyrics you missed, and do this repeatedly until you feel comfortable enough to sing along. This joint effort of reading and pronouncing really helps you learn a song and commit more of the vocabulary and grammar to memory. This practice also means you inevitably end up singing to yourself in the language throughout the day. 🎶 Finally, make the song part of your music routine Once you feel like you understand a song well, add it to your usual rotation and new playlists you make. Listening again after a long hiatus becomes a nice, easy way to reinforce what you learned. You’ll find more nuance later on, during the fifth or tenth listen, like double entendres or deeper meanings. How Music Can Help You Learn a Language (Part I) 🎶 First, start with music you enjoy Learning with music shouldn’t feel like a chore. Start by listening to the same genres of music you already like – if you think love ballads are boring, don’t listen to them in another language. On Spotify, I like to search for a combination of a country that speaks the language I'm learning and the genre I want to listen to, like “Mexican Pop.” And if you already know some of the language, you might try some search terms in the language, too (maybe "música mexicana"). More often than not, people will have already created a playlist for it. 🎶 Then, read up about the artists After finding songs that you like, try to find everything you can about the artist. Learn about where they are from and who their influences are, so you understand the cultural context of their music a bit better. Going down this rabbit hole leads you to learn about the history and culture of a community in ways that you would never have found on your own. Start by looking for articles or news in your own language, but take a look at information in the new language, too – it's OK to not understand everything yet, but it can also be fun to start learning more music vocabulary this way. #playlist #songs #tips

HOW TO USE MOVIES & TV SHOWS TO LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE (Part 2) 🍿 Immerse yourself [Rating: hard] Audio: in the language you’re learning (e.g. Spanish) Subtitles: also in the language you’re learning! (e.g. Spanish) How it works: With this setup, you'll learn to match what you hear with what you read. This combination is great for advanced learners, and it's a good challenge for intermediate learners, too. You may not understand the show as thoroughly with this setup, but you've got the visuals of what's happening on screen to help you out, too. Pro tip: Sometimes the subtitles don’t match the audio word-for-word, so don't doubt your listening skills if that happens. Instead, think of it as getting 2 expressions for the price of 1. 🍿 Watch like a local [Rating: even harder!] Audio: in the language you’re learning (e.g. Spanish) Subtitles: none (!) How it works: This option works well for advanced learners, those up for a challenge, and those already familiar with the show! So if you're looking for an excuse to binge-watch an old favorite, this would be an especially fun choice. Pro tip: Facial expressions and gestures can help you fill in the gaps if you don't understand every word. This option is easiest when watching something you're already familiar with, but use any context you can to help support your language learning. To conclude, remember that there's no single best way to use TV to learn a language. Choose what to watch and how to watch it depending on your own goals and interests. You might be surprised by how much you already know. 🍿 Improve listening skills [Rating: medium-to-hard] Audio: in the language you’re learning (e.g. Spanish) Subtitles: in your own language (e.g. English) How it works: This setup is great for beginners and intermediate learners too, because it gives you easier listening practice, especially with identifying individual words within a longer stream of audio. With subtitles in your own language, it should be fairly easy to follow the show. Pro tip: For a challenge, see how much you can understand without checking the subtitles, like when you run to the kitchen for a snack and can only hear the audio. #tips

HOW TO PICK MOVIES & TV SHOWS FOR LANGUAGE PRACTICE Here are top tips for finding something to watch in the language you’re studying: 📽️ Rewatch something familiar Not that you need another reason to re-watch your all-time favorite movie or TV show, but it's a great way to practice your language skills! Since you don’t have to spend energy figuring out the storyline, you can focus your attention on the language. 📽️ Watch children's movies If you’re a beginner, content for kids can be a neat way to expose yourself to the language. Children’s movies can be easy for adults to understand: there will likely be more concrete language, clear action, and linear storylines that are made understandable with the visuals on screen. They can also be a fun peek into the culture! 📽️ Decide what you want to practice You’ll hear different phrases, slang, and maybe even dialects on a TV show about gardening than in an action movie. And if you’re picking a TV show, think about whether it’s a show with a script or reality TV. Scripted shows are more carefully produced and more edited than reality shows, so if you want to hear real people using real language in real time, reality TV is the choice for you! 📽️ Look for options from countries that speak the language Shows originally produced in the language you’re learning will give you an opportunity to learn about new cultural aspects related to that language. At the end of the day, though, the best thing to watch is something you're interested in so that you're motivated to pay attention to it! #tips

PSYCHOLOGY TIPS TO MAKE FOREIGN LANGUAGE LEARNING EASIER (Part II) ⭐️ Break the language barrier Fear of making a mistake is one of the biggest obstacles in the process of learning a foreign language. It’s crucial for every language learner to overcome this, and here’s how: 1) Stop waiting until you’re ready; 2) Even though you’re scared, just start talking; 3) Find a native speaker you can practice speaking with. Unless you break the language barrier, you’re never going to be ready to move on and improve your language skills. Be proud of yourself for daring to learn something new and don't let anything stop you from practicing. ⭐️ Make it fun Instead of sticking to traditional means of learning the language, you should twist it up and make it more suitable for your character. Here’s what you could do: 1) Read foreign-language articles or books about the topics you're most interested in; 2) Watch foreign-language movies in your favorite genre; 3) Listen to foreign language music that you like. Language should serve as a tool for becoming a better, more knowledgeable, and open-minded person. Enjoy the process of learning a language and you’ll be surprised to see how much it influences your language skills. Stepping into a whole new world of words, rules, sounds, and expressions can be intimidating for most learners. However, with the right guidance and a clear goal, it doesn’t have to be that difficult. There are some tips and tricks which can help make foreign language learning much easier and faster. If you feel like you could use a hand, just keep reading. ⭐️ Find motivation Motivation is key to success, and not only in terms of language learning. With the right motivation, you’ll be able to do, learn, memorize, and achieve so much more. Therefore, the first rule of learning a new language is to find motivation for doing it. It could be anything: finding a better job, moving away to a foreign country, establishing communication with someone speaking the language, etc. Whatever it is, make sure you have that goal in front of your eyes all the time. This will give you the energy and desire to persist. ⭐️ Explore the culture When you feel closely connected to the language you’re learning, you’ll find it much more interesting and pleasant to learn. Perceiving language as a bunch of words you say differently than in your native language isn’t going to take you very far. However, perceiving language as a part of a culture is going to help you fall in love with it. For example, if you’re trying to learn Italian, you should listen to Italian music, watch Italian movies, learn about the Italian culture, customs, and habits, travel to Italy and immerse yourself in their culture.
