I’ve been thinking a lot about the education system, school teachers, and university professors recently. In October, I watched Dead Poets Society (1989). This movie touched my heart. Have you ever watched it? If not, I highly recommend it. For those who saw this film, I’m wondering if you had a bright teacher or professor such as Mr. Keating? I thought immediately about M. Alain Antoni-Gautier, my French professor. I came to Paris barely speaking French in 2016. I got into a group with a higher level than mine. It was quite tough, but I decided to stay in that group because I noticed that M. Antoni-Gautier was different from other professors and that I could learn a lot from him and his classes. I asked him if I could stay, and he didn’t even want me to leave – he believed in my capacities (this is a very comforting feeling that motivates you to do your best). The semester that I spent with M. Antoni-Gautier and my fellow students was one of the most memorable experiences I’ve had in my life. M. Antoni-Gautier was born to be a brilliant professor. In classes, he was not using technology. And you know what? We didn’t miss it at all. All that M. Antoni-Gautier was using were markers, a board, and his beautifully handwritten exercises delivered to each student. I’ve never seen that before in my life. He inspired me immensely. I remember particularly one class when M. Antoni-Gautier asked us what our mottos in life were. He wrote his own on the board « Amour et humour, toujours ! » which means “Love and humour, always!” in English. He’s absolutely right. As long as we have love and humour in our lives, even during hardships these two powerful aspects bring us more light. So here are my questions for you. Have you ever had a remarkable teacher at school and/or professor at university? What did they tell you? Write down in this comment section their full name, which subject they were teaching, the year when you heard them saying the significant phrase, the city, and the country where it happened.
