For the first time in the history of mathematics, we are faced with the situation that open problems in pure mathematics -- one of the primary fuels for mathematical discovery -- are being mined as a non-renewable resource.

I'm raising funds on behalf of Rozan Abu Amsha, a young Palestinian girl who dreams of going to college and building a better future for herself and her family. Rozan has worked toward the opportunity to continue her education, but the devastating circumstances her family has experienced have made that dream incredibly difficult to achieve. Her family home was bombed and completely destroyed, leaving Rozan, her four siblings, and her family without the security of the home they once had. Today, her family is struggling to afford even the most basic necessities. There are times when they barely have enough food to eat properly, and with the family facing such severe financial hardship, paying for college is simply beyond their reach.

When neoliberalism became the default way we understood ourselves, our inner world became coloured with advertisements, and slogans, and radical politics got overshadowed by radical self-acceptance. We became project managers in our own lives, instead of active participants. Every solution once found in your neighbours kitchen, was now to be found on the market, on a delivery app. When community fell apart, we all went to therapy, where we could talk about our personal problems instead of the social issues facing us all. We stopped living our lives with the public, and started living our lives in public; knocking down our bedroom walls and showing rhe world the inside of our minds. We lost our love of life for the lust of likes. We began to become main characters, finished products, and—dare I say it—content creators (sorry.) When we put ourselves first, no matter who else is sitting at the table, self-love came at the cost of loving everyone else. And this is what I call neoliberal therapy – when personal care mutates into a virus of narcissism. Now our main objective is to make ourselves a priority. The old machine of hedonism got doused in a new coating of spirituality. And we don’t recognise the same rusty cogs turning, they’ve become more subtle, and sleek after their wellness makeover. So now our capacity to feel good, and accept ourselves no matter the cost, is what marks the measure of a person. The greatest trick of neoliberal therapy, was to tell us that happiness comes from within, so we don’t need to create a better world for everyone to live in anymore, we can just manifest a better reality for ourselves. The most horrible people I’ve ever met, say they’re on a journey of healing and self-discovery. Maybe they should stop looking.
