The Advanced MRI Section (AMRI) in the Intramural Research Program of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland is seeking a postdoctoral fellow for the development of high resolution MRI methods to study iron and myelin distributions in the brain. Candidates interested in other projects in the Section will also be considered. Recent hardware and pulse sequence developments in AMRI have improved resolution robustness to head motion, and sensitivity to the unique effects of iron and myelin on image contrast. Novel methods are being developed to combine various MRI contrasts to improve the separation between iron and myelin. In part, this is based on detailed analysis of T2* and T2 signal decays in the various brain tissue types. AMRI maintains active collaborations with other research groups that have interest in applying novel methods to the study of neurodegenerative disorders and epilepsy. Other research in the group concerns the combined use of EEG and fMRI to characterize the contribution of neuronal and autonomic activity changes across the full range of arousal states during overnight sleep. As part of the NIH intramural program, AMRI has access to unique imaging and computational resources, including access to four 3 T and three 7 T MRI scanners, EEG and MEG systems, and a large (currently 107,000-core) computational cluster. A human 11.7 T is slated to be (re)energized early 2022. In addition, AMRI has expertise in state-of-the-art MR imaging techniques and data analysis tools, and a dedicated group of researchers including MRI physicists and sleep neuroscientists. We are recruiting three Physician Scientists and/or Postdoctoral Fellows to participate in “National Career Development Consortium for Excellence in Glycosciences” training at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine or Cleveland Clinic (https://glycocareers.cclinic.jhu.edu/). The objective of this nationwide program is to invest in the career development of the next generation of “glycoscience literate” biomedical investigators. This fellowship will provide scholars with an unparalleled opportunity to participate in cross-disciplinary research, obtain advanced knowledge, skills, and professional exposure within the glycosciencs, as well as to develop a research portfolio from which to launch independent careers. The Rahimi laboratory in the Center for Immunology and Inflammatory Diseases at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School is seeking a post-doctoral fellow to study Th2 cell fate decisions in the context of allergic immunity. The Kleinstiver Laboratory (www.kleinstiverlab.org) in the Center for Genomic Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, is seeking highly motivated post-doctoral fellow candidates. The Department of Anesthesiology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, seeks a Postdoctoral Research Scientist in the lab of George Hasko, MD, PhD. The lab is focused on the regulation of immunity by purinergic receptors including ATP and adenosine receptors. The experiments conducted will use cellular and in vivo models of inflammation. An ideal applicant must have solid experience with contemporary techniques and experience with cellular and molecular techniques, including studies in cultured cells and in the isolation of primary cells from the mouse tissues such as liver, spleen, and macrophages. Additionally, the candidate should have expertise in working with mice, preparation of mRNA and protein lysates from tissues and cells, performance of real-time PCR and Western blotting and gene silencing approaches in cultured cells. Experience in RNA sequencing, ATAC sequencing and in CRISPR-Cas9 studies would be ideal. We are seeking multiple postdoctoral trainees to take on leading roles as part of the newly established Viral Epidemiology and Immunity Unit (VEIU). The VEIU is part of the Laboratory of Infectious Diseases (LID) within the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In the VEIU, we use a multidisciplinary approach to investigate immunological protec-tion against and susceptibility to emerging and reemerging viral diseases with the goal of informing how vaccines can be effectively and safely licensed and introduced through vaccination programs. Our research focuses on immunologically complex viral diseases with high global burden, including flaviviral diseases (such as dengue and Zika) and diseases caused by coronaviruses (including COVID-19). We will use a range of immunological assays and statistical tools to study determinants of disease in large observational cohort studies and vaccine trials. Postdoctoral trainees joining the VEIU will help design and implement projects, interacting directly with collaborators in the U.S. and internationally, including with experts leading longitudinal cohort studies in Nicaragua, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Ecuador, and the Philippines. NIH-funded postdoctoral position is available in Dr. Ferrone’s research group in the Department of Surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. The research  project is particularly focused on developing antibody-based immunotherapeutic strategies for the treatment of solid tumors with special emphasis on strategies to counteract the escape mechanisms utilized by tumor cells. The Lai lab (https://www.lai-lab.com/) is a research group in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital. The group conducts translational research on the effect of different environmental exposures on the human microbiome and lung diseases. Work in the lab is twofold, and involves both microbiology work as well as the application of computational approaches for the analysis and interpretation of next-generation sequencing data, particularly amplicon and shotgun metagenomics sequencing and related approaches. This training position is fully funded through a NIH grant (R01 AI144119 The school microbiome and asthma morbidity in inner-city children) and will focus on the role of the classroom microbiome on severity of asthma symptoms and the nasal microbiome of children. There are additional opportunities to work on other projects in the laboratory, which include a One Health project in Uganda looking at the effect of animal exposure on the human microbiome and lung health, a project looking at the effect of the chemical exposome on the gut microbiome, and a project focused on the lung and gut microbiome in COVID-19. These projects are well-suited to generate high impact publications, presentations at conferences and prepare the post-doctoral research fellow for a long-term career in academia or industry. A Postdoctoral Fellow position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Michael Mannstadt in the Endocrine Unit at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Mannstadt laboratory investigates molecular mechanisms controlling the development and function of parathyroid glands, which produce parathyroid hormone that regulates calcium and phosphate homeostasis. We employ wide-ranging techniques to study parathyroid in vitro and in vivo. A major focus of the laboratory is to understand the differentiation of pluripotent stem cells towards parathyroid cells. These studies will lead to an improved understanding of parathyroid function and have important implications for treating parathyroid diseases.
