My observations: - 1. No matter what anyone says, your university's ranking and reputation does matter to some extent. 2. Counters from 27 to 35 were working. 3. Both the Chinese VOs are present, but I saw many approvals. 4. There's nothing like an approval rate of the consulate. Just be confident and prepare well. Some VOs ask more and some ask less, but all VOs do approve visas. After all, they're there for that. My suggestions: - 1. VOs may sometimes not be clearly audible, so it's better to ask them to repeat instead of assuming and answering wrongly. 2. Every counter approved candidates while I was there, so don't worry about choosing a counter because that's assigned to you and cannot be changed. Just prepare well. 3. Reach an hour before your slot timing, because they do take people in early. Don't reach earlier than an hour before your slot timing cause that'll just be a waste of time and it might be raining heavily, and you'll get drenched cause the consulate doesn't have any provisions for people standing outside. 4. The VOs don't care if you get wet in the rain or if you wear a t-shirt or anything casual. Your clothing has no impact as long as it is decent. You're going for a student visa, so dress like a student. Almost everyone was in formal or semi-formal wear though. 5. The entire process takes around an hour, but your interview will probably last for less than a minute. 6. Keep a good posture and do not lean over the counter. It matters! 7. Speak good English with clear pronunciation and answer naturally. Don't mug up! They can notice that easily. 8. I saw counter 34 approving students going to top universities cause 2 people going to Rutgers and 2 going to USC were approved. A few were rejected within 10 seconds each. 9. I feel that answers to 'why this university' (at least for the people not going to the top universities) should not seem like they were mugged up, or the spit out the obvious facts. It's better to be very well prepared with this answer because the students rejected by VO at counter 34 are only asked this question and nothing more. He doesn't ask this to students going to the top universities (say around the top 30-40). Consider this question your only chance to impress him. I'd suggest saying something unique that truly attracts you to the university and not sticking to the cliché stuff like the coursework or its flexibility.
