♦️ Bitcoin mining difficulty rose 4.16% to 132.76T
The September 19 retarget lifted Bitcoin mining difficulty from 127.45T to 132.76T at block 967,680. Bitcoin was trading around $81,000 on September 20, helping offset part of the pressure that higher difficulty puts on dollar-denominated mining revenue. Less efficient fleets and miners paying higher power prices remain the most exposed as margins tighten.
♦️ CoinShares: listed miners’ average cash cost ran 29% above Bitcoin’s quarter-end price
The weighted average ex-tax cash cost to produce one BTC among listed miners was about $75,500 in Q2, against a $58,400 quarter-end price. Results diverged sharply: ABTC, Bitdeer, HIVE and IREN mined below their realised prices, CleanSpark and Riot sat near breakeven, while MARA’s $86,126 cash cost overshot its $70,315 realised revenue by roughly $15,800 per coin. Hashprice bottomed at $27.7 per PH/s/day in June. Core Scientific paid Block $41.9M to cancel about 15 EH/s of 3nm chip deliveries, and at least 35 EH/s is scheduled to leave the listed cohort.
♦️ Bitdeer mined 1,310 BTC in August but ended the month holding 61
Output rose 249% year over year from 375 BTC, with self-mining hashrate at 79.9 EH/s against 30.0 EH/s a year earlier — and CoinShares puts Bitdeer among the miners producing below their realised price in Q2. The treasury moved the other way: 61 BTC at month end versus 257 in July. Its AI cloud arm runs 4,328 GPUs at 92% utilisation for roughly $86M in annualised recurring revenue, plus a non-binding LOI for an initial 30 MW AI data center in Bhutan.
♦️ Ethiopia cut miners’ power supply by 77%
The state utility reduced deliveries to 23% of contracted volumes after El Niño cut reservoir inflows by 20%, prioritising households and manufacturers. The cuts came in stages — 75%, then 50%, then 23%. Miners had supplied 35% of the utility’s revenue last fiscal year and consumed almost a third of Ethiopia's electricity output. EEP will reassess the restrictions in October.
♦️ Three one-block reorgs in a month; top two pools hold around 45% of hashrate
As of mid-September, Foundry USA and AntPool together accounted for roughly 45% of Bitcoin hashrate. Separately, the network has seen three one-block reorgs since August 16, the latest on September 11 between AntPool and SpiderPool — what miners call an orphan race, when competing valid blocks are found almost simultaneously and one eventually becomes stale. No attack or double-spend was involved.

Luxor estimates total net ASIC capacity at roughly 1,150 EH/s against about 915 EH/s of active hashrate, leaving some 235 EH/s unviable, curtailed, in transit or under maintenance. The risk got sharper in August: hashprice rose 24.4% from $31.63 to $39.33 per PH/s/day and hit $40.02 on August 27, the first $40 print in 220 days. Improving economics can pull marginal machines back online, only for the added hashrate to lift difficulty and compress margins again. Fleets in the 25–38 J/TH band still averaged about $45/MWh against a $48/MWh network-average power cost — a third consecutive month below breakeven.
♦️ Weak ASIC demand pushed Canaan's product revenue down to $13.6M
Canaan’s equipment revenue fell from $42.9M in Q1 to $13.6M in Q2, and total revenue halved to $31.9M. The company points to “decreased computing power sold and average selling price, resulting from a tightening of overall market demand led by the decline in the bitcoin price.” Its own non-JV fleet meanwhile reached 10.05 EH/s, up 23.3% year over year, producing 243 BTC in the quarter at an all-in power cost near $0.043/kWh.

Holdings closed the month at 13,703 BTC, of which 3,951 sat as derivative collateral or receivable. Average operating hashrate was 38.3 EH/s at a peak fleet efficiency of 16.07 J/TH. The company also received conditional ERCOT classification for 585 MW of contracted capacity for batch zero baseload designation and 300 MW for studied load — power access and queue position now matter as much as fleet size.
♦️ HIVE passed $1M in average daily revenue, with about $100K from GPU cloud
Since August 21 HIVE has mined roughly 12 BTC a day, about 2% of global output, while its GPU cloud has generated around $100,000 in average daily revenue. Combined revenue now exceeds $1M a day under current conditions. HIVE reports more than $600M in GPU cloud contract value year to date, but notes this includes letters of intent and does not guarantee recognised revenue. For now, mining remains the main operating engine.
♦️ Plattsburgh is weighing a 12-month moratorium on mining and AI data centers
The New York city’s common council discussed pausing permits for any facility drawing 300 kW or more. The proposal places crypto mining and AI data centers under the same "high energy use facility" definition. Nothing is approved yet and the council meets again on September 17. Plattsburgh was among the first US jurisdictions to impose a temporary mining moratorium — an 18-month pause back in 2018.
♦️ Mexico seized 300 mining rigs illegally drawing power from a hydroelectric complex
Authorities found the site in Tlaola, Puebla, next to the Nuevo Necaxa complex, connected directly to infrastructure fed by the federal dam. Transformers, medium-voltage gear and satellite antennas were seized alongside the machines. Federal prosecutors, the Navy and state police are investigating, with a separate money-laundering line of inquiry.

🇰🇿 Kazakhstan has been steadily building out its digital mining rules since 2023. Mining is licensed, equipment goes into a state registry, and this summer the country, added another piece to the puzzle: a strategic mining mechanism with long-term power agreements for qualifying projects.
And the market is moving with it: 78 digital mining entities and more than 465,000 registered mining devices.
If you mine in Kazakhstan, there’s one more thing to keep in mind: your pool needs to be accredited locally. Right now, only seven pools are on the list.
