Old infrared telescopes reveal secrets of nearby galaxies NASA and ESA have published images of four galaxies close to the Milky Way. Their peculiarity is that they were derived from data from space telescopes that have already completed their mission. The telescope was often unable to detect light from scattered clouds on the outskirts of galaxies. So the researchers supplemented its maps with data from three other "retired" space missions: Planck, IRAS and COBE. The collaboration of four telescopes allowed scientists to obtain detailed infrared images of the Andromeda Galaxy (pictured), the Triangle Galaxy, and the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds.

Amazing ancient star in the Milky Way One of the oldest stars in the Universe, J0815+4729 is located within our Galaxy. It has a surprisingly large amount of oxygen in its composition, an element that was not created at the time of the Big Bang, but appeared later as a result of nuclear fusion reactions in the bowels of the first generations of extremely massive luminaries. Oxygen is the third most abundant element in the Universe after hydrogen and helium. It is necessary for all known forms of life and is a major component of the Earth's crust. However, oxygen never existed in the young Universe, and tracing the history of its and other elements comes down to studying the oldest stars. J0815+4729 is one of them.

What would happen to our Moon if the Earth were shaped like a doughnut? Most likely, it would be pulled toward the hole, and it would bob up and down in the center of the planet. Or it could be affected by the gravity of the outer edges of the doughnut to create an octagonal orbit around the Earth.
