𝗛𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗿 (Hüttenberg, 6 July 1912 - Friesach, 7 January 2006) was an Austrian mountaineer, researcher, geographer and writer. With the rise of the National Socialist party in Austria, Harrer became a member of the SS, having in 1938 joined a German expedition to Nanga Parbat in the Himalayas, now part of Pakistan. After the outbreak of World War II in 1939, Harrer was captured by the British colonial army. In 1944 he managed to escape together with Peter Aufschnaiter and after 21 months on the run he managed to cross the high mountains to Tibet, where he stayed for seven years, having established a friendship with the young Dalai Lama, becoming known as the Teacher of Spiritual Leader.
