| 6 | What Does "Test Optional" Mean?
First things first, what exactly are test-optional colleges? At its most basic definition, test optional means that you do not need to submit SAT or ACT scores to be considered for admission to a particular school. So while you may submit test scores if you want, you are not actually required to do so. Colleges that are test optional de-emphasize the importance of the SAT and ACT by making the tests an unnecessary component of the admission process. So if you took the SAT or ACT but didn't score as highly as you'd hoped you would, you can apply to test-optional colleges in order to avoid having to send in any unsatisfactory test scores that could potentially hurt your application.
Throughout this article, we refer to a school as being test optional if it does not outright require SAT or ACT scores from all undergraduate applicants.
That said, not all colleges and universities maintain the same policies in regard to their handling of standardized test scores. Below, we look at some of the ways test optional takes on new meanings at different schools.
Test Optional
Truly test-optional schools are exactly as they sound: you decide whether you'd like to submit your SAT/ACT test scores or not. In other words, you get to determine how you want to present yourself to schools.
For example, if you feel your SAT scores are subpar, you might choose to withhold your scores and instead opt for strengthening other parts of your application, such as your personal statement and resume.
Popular test-optional colleges and universities include the University of Chicago, Columbia, Nyu, Stanford, Princeton, Wake Forest University, Bowdoin College, Bucknell University, Pitzer College, and Brandeis University etc.
Test Flexible
Test-flexible schools are slightly different from regular test-optional colleges. At these schools, you may submit other test scores in place of SAT/ACT scores. Acceptable scores will vary depending on the institution, but you can generally fulfill the SAT/ACT requirement by submitting scores from AP tests, IB tests, and/or school-administered placement tests.
Test flexible schools used to be more common before the pandemic, but now many of those schools have switched to a test optional policy. Currently, Jhon Hopkins University is the only well-known test flexible school | 324 |

Granted the fact that I come from a low-income family in a sub-Saharan country, the resources available to me are very limited. I can not take classes that go beyond introductory calculus. I do not have the chance to participate in global competitions like the Olympiads. The number of role models I have is also severely limited. This means I did not have the opportunity to create a match between my knowledge of mathematics and my passion for it. Nevertheless, the sense ofΒ purpose that I drive from studying mathematics has allowed me to learn far beyond the curriculum at my school despite the many setbacks I work against. I know that as long as I stay true to my purpose, as long as I embrace the journey of self-discovery and growth, I will find my way forward.

One odd day, I asked my mother what she enjoyed the most. I was genuinely surprised when she started talking about her job and the pleasure it brought her. She went into specific aspects of her job and how they incited a sense of excitement, joy and purpose in her. Her unexpectedly enthusiastic answer led me to ask the same question, this time to myself. In the ensuing few
months after that, I indulged myself in a study of some of the philosophical discussions about what happiness, a good life and purpose are. This little journey of mine is best summarized by Simone de Beauvoirβs argument in The Ethics of Ambiguity: the greatest ethical imperative is to find the meaning of our life without limiting other people from doing the same. I found these ideas to be immensely motivating. The meaning of life, I believe now, is to see structure and order in a seemingly chaotic and indifferent universe. And I believe this is best done through a study of mathematics.
My father has encouraged me to study math since I was a child and I did manage to get good grades in my math classes. That was however the extent to which I had valued math. It did not occur to me that it could as well be the language of the gods, so to speak, so anointed by Galileo just at the dawn of the modern era. I now understand math to be an indispensable tool in the
deification of humanity, our catapult to the βUbermenschβ if you will. It allows us to attain precision, quantify uncertainty, describe the laws of nature, and even surpass the three dimensional limits of our mammalian brain. Ever since I realized this intertwining between the
laws of nature, human progress, and math, my math classes have given me a deep sense of purpose that has helped me to stay optimistic in the face of adversities.
Having a defined purpose is not a luxury. Given the limitations of life on earth, we all will eventually run into adversities that make us question the value of existence. Having a sense of direction and meaning is a necessity to stay strong through these crises that inevitably arrive in the life of a postmodern human. This is what I figured. When my father suffered from breast
cancer, what kept me going forward was the belief that what I do will one day help advance humanity beyond the limitations of maladies like cancer. After my father recovered, a global pandemic ensued making it difficult to stay optimistic. Even further, my country got submerged in a deadly civil war that has engendered human suffering of biblical proportions. However, even
under these bleak circumstances I had to suffer through at a time when I most needed stability, believing that beauty and excellence that transcends the tragic reality of life might be possible through studying mathematics kept me going forward.
