Oil prices jump most in nearly a year after Iran launches missile attack at Israel
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/oil-prices-jump-most-in-nearly-a-year-after-iran-launches-missile-attack-at-israel-173122954.html
Oil prices spiked on Tuesday after Iran fired a series of ballistic missiles at Israel, pushing prices to the highest level in nearly one year.
West Texas Intermediate (CL=F) rose more than 5% to trade just below $72 per barrel.
Brent (BZ=F), the international benchmark price, also climbed roughly 5% to hover firmly above $75 per barrel.
One concern around the crude market's rise is the impact it could have on inflation, as higher energy prices over the long term can often increase input costs for goods and services.
This could potentially lead to more price increases across the board, including non-energy categories.

Iran preparing imminent missile attack against Israel: Senior U.S. official
https://www.axios.com/2024/10/01/iran-missile-attack-israel
The U.S. has indications that Iran is preparing to imminently launch a ballistic missile attack against Israel, a senior White House official tells Axios.
Tehran has been vowing retaliation after a series of recent Israeli assassinations.
The White House believes it is about to begin, and is already warning of "severe consequences" for Iran.
Iran is expected to use ballistic missiles that could reach Israel within 12 minutes rather than drones or cruise missiles that allow for more time to prepare a defense and intercept them.
Israeli Troops Begin Ground Offensive Against Hezbollah in Lebanon

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have announced the beginning of a ground offensive into Lebanon to battle Hezbollah after nearly a year of worsening cross-border violence linked to the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip.
"In accordance with the decision of the political echelon, a few hours ago, the IDF began limited, localized, and targeted ground raids based on precise intelligence against Hezbollah terrorist targets and infrastructure in southern Lebanon,"...
"These targets are located in villages close to the border and pose an immediate threat to Israeli communities in northern Israel."
The operation was said to be supported by IDF air and artillery strikes.
The offensive comes just days after massive Israeli airstrikes killed longtime Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah in the southern Beirut suburb of Dahiye,...

Dockworkers at ports from Maine to Texas go on strike, a standoff risking new shortages
https://apnews.com/article/port-strike-ila-dockworkers-begins-e5468e760f46a64e4322d1702beb1f72
Dockworkers at ports from Maine to Texas began walking picket lines early Tuesday in a strike over wages and automation that could reignite inflation and cause shortages of goods if it goes on more than a few weeks.
Workers began picketing at the Port of Philadelphia shortly after midnight with signs that read “Fight automation, save jobs, ILA demands” and “Automation hurts families.
The U.S. Maritime Alliance, which represents the ports, said Monday evening that both sides had moved off of their previous wage offers, but when picket lines went up just after midnight, it was apparent that no deal had been reached.
ILA members make a base salary of about $81,000 per year, but some can pull in over $200,000 annually with large amounts of overtime.
Monday evening, the alliance said it had increased its offer to 50% raises over six years, and it pledged to keep limits on automation in place from the old contract.
The union wants a complete ban on automation.
If it goes more than a few weeks, a work stoppage would significantly snarl the nation’s supply chain, potentially leading to higher prices and delays in goods reaching households and businesses.

According to DownDetector's heat map, it appears that outages are concentrated in the following states: New York, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, and North Carolina.
A site that has been tracking the issue claims that outage reports began piling up at around 9:04 am ET.
According to a report from Reuters, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) said it is "working to determine the cause and extent of these service disruptions."
