🤔 Why do we really need transaction fees? And why are they so expensive? Lots of people do not understand why on the BNB Smart ChaIn or Polygon blockchains, transaction fees are often less than a dollar, while on the Ethereum blockchain they can reach tens or even hundreds of dollars. 1️⃣ The first obvious reason is financial incentives for miners or stakers. Blockchains are inherently decentralized. There is no single center that is responsible for processing transactions. Therefore, you need to incentivize miners or stakers who will put in their time and effort to process transactions and keep the blockchain secure. Without the commission, decentralized blockchains would not work at all. 2️⃣ The second reason is protection from spam attacks. Many blockchains would be happy to make fees cheaper to attract users, but without certain fees, attackers can spam the blockchain with empty transactions, creating an artificial load and interfering with its operation. Therefore, even on very efficient blockchains, there is a small fee to make spam attacks unprofitable. There was even a case when Elon Musk proposed to reduce fees in Dogecoin to almost zero. Then he was severely criticized for not understanding the basic things. 🥶 Why are Ethereum transactions so expensive? Blockchain cannot be secure, decentralized, and scalable at the same time – one of these parameters must be sacrificed. This is called the Blockchain Trilemma, a term coined by Vitalik Buterin, the creator of Ethereum. Ethereum developers sacrificed scalability (speed and cheap fees) for security and decentralization. But some projects have gone the other way: they reduce the number of nodes (decentralization to make the blockchain cheaper and faster.
