🔥 THE FIRE HAZARD YOU MAY BE CARRYING RIGHT NOW! 🔋
Your smartphone, laptop, tablet, power bank, e-bike, scooter and other everyday devices may all contain lithium-ion batteries.
These batteries when damaged, can overheat, catch fire or enter thermal runaway, producing intense heat and potentially spreading fire rapidly.
🇧🇧 In Barbados, where many households rely on rechargeable devices every day, battery safety should be part of your fire-safety routine.
Remember:
✅ Use the charger recommended by the manufacturer.
✅ Inspect batteries and charging cables regularly.
✅ Keep batteries away from excessive heat and direct sunlight.
✅ Never use a swollen, cracked, leaking or damaged battery.
✅ Don't ignore unusual heat, odours, smoke or hissing sounds.
🚨 A small battery can create a BIG fire.
CALL TO ACTION:
If a battery looks damaged or behaves unusually, stop using it and seek appropriate professional advice.
🔥 Fire Safety Starts With You! 🇧🇧 @bajanfirenet #FPW

🌙🔋 WOULD YOU SLEEP BESIDE A BATTERY YOU DON'T TRUST?
Many people plug in their phones, laptops, e-bikes, scooters and power banks before going to bed.
But charging a lithium-ion battery while you are asleep means you may not notice the warning signs of a developing problem.
⚠️ Overheating
⚠️ Burning or unusual smells
⚠️ Swelling
⚠️ Hissing or popping sounds
⚠️ Smoke
A battery fire can develop quickly—and when you're asleep, precious escape time can be lost.
🇧🇧 Barbados: Make safe charging part of your household fire plan.
SAFER CHARGING HABITS:
🔌 Charge on a hard, stable surface.
🚫 Don't cover charging devices with bedding or clothing.
🚫 Don't charge damaged batteries.
🚫 Avoid using incompatible or counterfeit chargers.
🏠 Keep charging equipment away from exits and escape routes.
CALL TO ACTION:
Before you go to bed tonight, check what you've left charging. Could you safely leave it plugged in overnight?
Don't let convenience compromise your family's safety.
🔥 Charge Smart. Sleep Safe. 🇧🇧 @bajanfirenet #FPW

🚨🔋 YOUR BATTERY MAY WARN YOU BEFORE IT FAILS. WILL YOU NOTICE?
Lithium-ion batteries don't always fail without warning.
A battery that is becoming dangerous may show signs such as:
⚠️ Swelling or bulging
⚠️ Unusual heat during normal use or charging
⚠️ Strange odours
⚠️ Hissing, popping or cracking sounds
⚠️ Discolouration or leakage
⚠️ Smoke or vapour
⚠️ A noticeable reduction or unusual change in performance
DON'T IGNORE THE WARNING SIGNS.
If a battery becomes unusually hot, swollen, damaged or starts producing smoke or unusual odours:
🚫 Stop using it.
🚫 Do not attempt to repair it yourself.
🚫 Do not continue charging it.
🚫 Keep people away from the area.
If there is smoke, fire or an immediate danger, evacuate and call the appropriate emergency services.
🇧🇧 CALL TO ACTION:
Check your phones, laptops, power banks, e-bikes, scooters and other rechargeable devices today.
One minute of inspection could prevent a serious emergency.
🔥 Recognise the warning. Act early. Stay safe. @bajanfirenet #FPW
FLASH-FLOOD WARNING IN EFFECT FOR BARBADOS
During the late morning, heavy to intense showers occurred across St. Peter and St. Lucy. This activity is likely to spread across the island this afternoon and into tonight. Due to the already saturated soils, the BMS believes that further rainfall will result in flash flooding and, as a result, has upgraded the flash flood watch to a FLASH FLOOD WARNING for this afternoon. A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect for tonight.
This Flash Flood Warning was issued at noon on Monday, October 5, and will be updated at 6:00 p.m. today or sooner if conditions warrant. (BMS) @bajanfirenet #weather
