On April 1, 1996, photographer Jonathan Mannion(@jonathanmannion) shot what would become one of hip-hop’s most enduring album covers. Hired by Roc-A-Fella Records on a shoestring budget, Mannion landed the job after undercutting competing bids by just $300, eventually earning $1,300 for the entire shoot. Originally, Jay-Z planned to call the album Heir to the Throne, prompting Mannion to prepare a regal visual treatment. But days before cameras rolled, the title changed to Reasonable Doubt. With it came a new creative direction. Mannion persuaded Jay-Z to abandon the flashy, Scarface-inspired aesthetic in favor of something rooted in New York’s own mythology.
