READ CAREFULLY If God Exists, Why Does Life Hurt So Much? There’s so much evil in the world. Does it disprove God? He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Colossians 1:13-14 We are all imperfect people who, out of God’s love for us, are given the freedom to make choices. When we make choices out of selfishness, pride, anger, fear or any other negative emotion or motive, we are choosing to disobey God. We hurt others, and even more, we hurt ourselves. This is sin, or missing the best that God desires for us. It started with Adam and Eve disobeying God in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3).  One of the results of sin is hurtfulness: we’re all unfairly sinned against, and it hurts. Since the moment that sin entered the world, it seems that all of our lives are full of trouble and sorrow (Job 14:1). When this life hurts, we can draw upon God for comfort and love The good news is that God has a plan through which our lives can be full of joy and fulfillment in spite of the pains of life. “These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.” (1 Peter 1:7-8, NLT). When we draw on a source beyond ourselves for strength and courage, then we are not alone in our pain. A loving God stands ready to give us comfort when we have the faith to ask.  Our only hope is sin judged on the Cross You see, God can use anything, even evil done to us, for our own good (Romans 8:28). God cares about our character, our heart and the eternal destiny of our souls more than anything else in His creation. He allows us to go through hurt and pain so that we can grow and mature. We can thank God that He is merciful, and is not “fair” with us, because if he was fair, he would reject us because we fall so far short of the standard he has set for us. (See Psalm 130:3) We have failed, and by our actions we have separated ourselves from God. But God has created for us a pathway to reconciliation through Christ’s work on the cross (2 Corinthians 5:21). His death in our place fully satisfied the penalty we all deserve (Isaiah 53:11; Romans 3:23-27). Hope born out of Hurt Even though we may have given up on God, he hasn’t given up on us. Jesus experienced betrayal, an illegal trial and a torturous death at the hands of sinful people—one that was, at the same time, the perfect plan of God (Acts 2:23). Out of His love for us, God sent His only Son, who is perfect and without sin, to Earth to take upon himself the sins of everyone—past, present and future—so that we can enjoy a life in relationship to him (Isaiah 53:6). Jesus dying in our place was unfair, but necessary, for God’s best for all of us. Pray this week: Father, rather than resenting the hurts I experience, teach me to see how you work them together for my good.
