Types of power plant & their uses: Power plants are facilities designed to convert different forms of energy into electrical energy. Depending on the primary energy source, power plants use different combinations of boilers, turbines, generators, combustion systems, reactors, hydraulic turbines, or renewable-energy conversion systems. ⚑ 1. Thermal power plant Uses heat produced by burning fuels such as coal or oil to generate steam. The steam drives a turbine connected to an electrical generator. βš›οΈ 2. Nuclear power plant Uses nuclear fission to produce heat, which generates steam for driving steam turbines and producing electricity. πŸ’§ 3. Hydroelectric power plant Uses the potential and kinetic energy of flowing or falling water. Water passes through hydraulic turbines, which drive generators. 🌬️ 4. Wind power plant Uses wind turbines to convert the kinetic energy of wind into mechanical rotation and then electrical energy. β˜€οΈ 5. Solar power plant Uses solar radiation to generate electricity. Photovoltaic plants convert sunlight directly into electricity, while solar-thermal plants use concentrated heat to produce power. πŸ”₯ 6. Natural gas power plant Burns natural gas in gas turbines to generate electricity. Combined-cycle plants can also use exhaust heat to produce steam and generate additional power. πŸ› οΈ 7. Diesel power plant Uses diesel engines coupled to generators. These plants are commonly used for backup power, emergency generation, and locations where grid power is unavailable. 🌱 8. Biomass power plant Uses organic materials such as agricultural residues, wood waste, and other biomass as fuel. The energy is converted into heat and then electricity. πŸŒ‹ 9. Geothermal power plant Uses naturally occurring heat from the Earth's interior. Hot water or steam from geothermal reservoirs is used to drive turbines. 🌊 10. Tidal power plant Harnesses the movement of seawater caused by tides. Tidal turbines or tidal barrages convert this movement into electrical energy. 🌊 11. Wave power plant Uses the movement of ocean waves to drive mechanical or hydraulic energy-conversion systems and generate electricity. βš™οΈ How a power plant works In many conventional power plants, the basic energy-conversion chain is: Primary energy β†’ Heat/mechanical energy β†’ Turbine/prime mover β†’ Generator β†’ Electrical energy Renewable systems can follow different conversion pathsβ€”for example: Sunlight β†’ PV cells β†’ DC electricity β†’ Inverter β†’ AC electricity Wind β†’ Rotor β†’ Generator β†’ Electrical power Water β†’ Hydraulic turbine β†’ Generator β†’ Electrical power πŸ”§ Important selection factors Power-plant selection depends on fuel or resource availability, required generating capacity, efficiency, capital cost, operating cost, reliability, environmental requirements, water availability, grid conditions, and geographical location.
