Jesus’ mission does not wait until we think we are ready. The need for the gospel in this broken world is far too urgent. We are called right now — even in spite of our frailty, failures, and doubts, even in the midst of our ordinary, busy, complicated lives. Jesus’ word to Simon Peter in Luke 5:10 is also a word to us: “Do not be afraid.” This is Jesus’ mission, and we trust that he will keep working with us and through us, “catching” others as he has caught us — in the deep, wide net of God’s mercy and love. Verse: Mark 16:15-20
Topic: Shall we now proclaim the Gospel?
This is the concluding verses of the book often referred to as the Great Commission and the Ascension.
Jesus instructs his disciples to go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. The mission of spreading the message of salvation is not limited to a particular group or region. Believers are commissioned to share the good news globally, inviting people of all nations to become followers of Christ.
Jesus connects belief and baptism with salvation, stating that those who believe and are baptized will be saved. Baptism is a public declaration of faith and an integral part of the journey of salvation. It symbolizes the inner transformation(repentance) that occurs when one believes in Jesus Christ.
Jesus lists several signs that will accompany those who believe, including casting out demons, speaking in new tongues, handling serpents, and healing the sick. These signs highlight the supernatural power that accompanies the work of God and the spreading of the gospel. They serve as demonstrations of God's authority and the transformative impact of faith.
After giving the Great Commission, Jesus ascends into heaven and sits at the right hand of God. So this signifies the completion of His earthly mission and the transition to the era where believers continue His work empowered by the Holy Spirit. So why are we idle?
The disciples, in response to Jesus' instructions, went out and preached everywhere, with the Lord working with them and confirming the word through accompanying signs. Obedience to the Word of God is followed by empowerment. The disciples' obedience resulted in the manifestation of signs that authenticated the message they proclaimed.
The disciples continued to preach and witness to the message of Christ despite challenges.
Believers are called to persistently proclaim the gospel, even in the face of opposition or difficulties. The work of spreading God's Word is ongoing and requires perseverance.
The Lord worked with the disciples as they preached, confirming the message through signs. The passage highlights the partnership between God and believers in the mission of spreading the gospel. God's power is actively at work in conjunction with human efforts because if God is not with us, there’ll be no transformation in the lives of men
In essence, today’s passage teaches about the Great Commission, the connection between belief and baptism, the signs that accompany believers, the ascension of Jesus, obedience to the Word, persistent gospel proclamation, and the partnership between God and those who proclaim His message. Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise.
Hope is used to describe the feeling of anticipating a future that is better than the present. When we cherish or desire something to happen or want it to be true, we say we have "hope."
In the secular world, hope is entangled with optimism, when we choose to see in any situation how things could work out for the best, but in biblical concepts, the Hebrew word YAKHAL or QAVAH, which means “to wait for” or have “tense expectations,” is used to describe the feeling of hope.
As Christians, our hope is not optimism or waiting for better circumstances like the world does. The hope we have is in a Person, God. It is God's past faithfulness that motivates our hope for the future. Like in today's verse, where the author of Hebrews tells us to “hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm,” why? “For God can be trusted to keep his promise.”
Because we know and understand God's past faithfulness, we can hold on to the hope that we affirm.
Now that we understand what it means to have hope and why we hope as Christians, what is "the hope that we affirm”?
Well, in the new covenant, the hope that we affirm is the assurance of eternal life and salvation through our faith in Christ Jesus. It is the belief that Jesus' sacrifice on the cross has set us free from the bondage of sin, and through His resurrection, we have been reconciled with God. This assures us of God's forgiveness, grace, and promise of everlasting life in His presence. This hope gives us the confidence to persevere in our daily lives, giving us a sense of purpose as we navigate through life's challenges, knowing that our ultimate destiny is secure in God's hands.
In a broader sense, the hope we affirm encompasses the anticipation of God's ultimate fulfillment of all His promises, including the final redemption and restoration of all things.
This hope is not merely wishful thinking or optimism about future circumstances, but a firm confidence in the redemptive work of Christ and the promises of God. It is a forward-looking expectation rooted in the belief that God is in control of the future and that His purposes will ultimately prevail.
So as today's verse says, “Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise.”
Dear heavenly Father, we thank You for the hope that You've given us in Christ and for the assurance that You are faithful to fulfill Your promises. Please help us to hold tightly to this hope, even in the midst of uncertainty and trials. Strengthen our faith, and let us always be reminded that You are in control of all things, working everything together for our good. May our lives be a testimony of Your faithfulness, and may we always trust in Your unfailing love. In Jesus' name, amen. | 154 |

We should be conscious of our actions and words, ensuring that we don't lead others astray, particularly those who are new in faith or vulnerable. This includes setting a positive example and refraining from actions that might hinder someone's spiritual journey.
Jesus uses strong, hyperbolic language to convey the seriousness of sin. He suggests radical actions, such as cutting off a hand or foot or gouging out an eye, to emphasize the need for drastic measures to avoid sin.
While Jesus doesn't intend for literal self-mutilation, he underscores the radical steps we should take to eliminate sin from our lives. This may involve removing influences, habits, or relationships that lead us into sin. It requires a committed effort to maintain personal holiness.
Jesus likens his followers to salt, highlighting its preserving quality. He also encourages living at peace with one another.
Believers are called to bring a preserving influence to the world, maintaining a distinct and positive impact. Additionally, living at peace emphasizes the importance of unity and harmony among followers of Christ. Striving for peace involves humility, forgiveness, and a willingness to reconcile. But now you can see it’s otherwise because Christians are even fighting each other.
If salt loses its saltiness, it is useless. Jesus challenges his followers to maintain their distinctive qualities.
As Christians, we are called to retain our distinctiveness and not conform to worldly ways. Our faith should be evident in our actions, attitudes, and interactions, preserving goodness and reflecting the character of Christ.
In essence, as followers of Christ, we are challenged to be mindful of our influence on others, take decisive steps to eliminate sin, and actively pursue peace and unity within the community of believers. The teachings call for a commitment to personal holiness, a deep sense of accountability for our actions, and a proactive pursuit of qualities that reflect the character of Christ in our lives.
Prayer: Lord, help me to stay away from sin and let me be a positive influence in the lives of men. Amen | 106 |
