A BIG win for privacy this week! Pflugerville resident's records request leads city to shut down license plate cameras Pflugerville, Texas, canceled its Flock Safety license plate reader contract and covered 28 cameras after resident Sam Aly’s public records request revealed unauthorized data access. Aly discovered that 459 agencies, mostly out-of-state entities, had searched the city’s database 1.6 million times in six months, far exceeding the approximately 80 authorized local partners. What's especially exciting is how fast this happened! A local resident made a public information request to the city a few weeks ago for network audit logs that showed every outside agency that searched the data from the cameras.  He received the data on Monday. The city council canceled the contract on Tuesday. Within the same week, the Independent School District cancelled their contract and all of the cameras in the city were covered. Anyone can do this.
