In response to the protest, the mayor of Ottawa declared a state of emergency on Sunday when truck convoys converged on the city in response to Canada's vaccine requirements for truckers. Since then, protests have spread across the country, but Ottawa remains the focal point in what has also become a debate about free speech, expression and the right to assemble. Residents have condemned the continuous noise, and Canadian officials have called for an end to the protest, with some even describing it as a “siege” and “insurrection.” Police have increased enforcement measures, issuing more than 500 tickets since February 5th while suspending truckers' licenses and towing vehicles.

Today, MRNA Technology is setting its sights on a new complex target—HIV. The biopharmaceutical company Moderna recently announced it is teaming up with the nonprofit International Aids Vaccine Initiative to develop an experimental HIV vaccine using the same technology as Moderna's Covid-19 jab. According to a company statement, Dr. Mark FeinBerg, president and CEO of IAVI, said they are tremendously excited about advancing this new direction in the HIV shot. The search for an HIV injection has been long and challenging but having new tools in terms of immunogens could be the key to making rapid progress toward an urgently needed, effective HIV vaccine. Since being discovered in the 1980s, AIDS has caused 35 million deaths worldwide. In 2019 it was estimated that 1.7 million people were infected, but many scientists are hopeful this new medical advancement is a positive step in changing the trajectory of deaths and infections.

On Monday, the World Health Organization (WHO) said that Europe is entering a new phase of the virus. The WHO's regional director, Dr. Hans Kluge, said the EU is moving toward a "pandemic endgame," with Omicron possibly infecting 60% of Europeans by March.

Imagine you are on a cruise ship. You are returning to Miami after a nice Caribbean vacation when suddenly, the ship turns around. That’s precisely what happened on one cruise line. A US judge issued a warrant to seize the Crystal Symphony cruise ship upon its return to Miami due to unpaid fuel fees. Instead of heading back to the Port of Miami on January 22nd as scheduled, however, the ship reversed course and returned to the Bahamas—docking at Bimini Island, where it remains. On January 23rd, the ship’s passengers were taken by ferry from Bimini to Fort Lauderdale. It is unclear exactly how many people were on board—reports say anywhere from 300 to 700. Peninsula Petroleum Far East filed a lawsuit in federal court, alleging that Crystal Cruises owes $4.6 million in unpaid fuel costs. The latest debacle in Southern California over a decision not to police certain areas is impacting many residents expecting packages and supplies through rail. Over the past two weeks alone, Union Pacific Rail has seen increased litter pile-up from stolen goods. This comes after officials say more than 90 retail containers are stolen per day. Since December 2020, the City of Angels has seen a 160% increase in criminal rail theft, which rose to 356% compared to October 2020. While Union Pacific agents have made hundreds of arrests, the rail company says less than half are being booked, and some are being released in less than 24 hours.
