H.E Eang Sophalleth, Minister of Environment, presided over the ceremony with participation from various stakeholders including the provincial governor, development partners, and civil society organizations. The event highlighted collaboration between the Ministry of Environment, UNDP, and the Coca-Cola Company to develop tree nursery stations. The Tboung Khmum tree nursery station is the first of five planned regional stations. Additional stations will be in Koh Kong, Kampong Speu, Siem Reap, and Mondulkiri provinces. Spanning three hectares, the Tboung Khmum station will produce one million tree seedlings annually. This initiative is a key component of Cambodia’s National Reforestation Strategy which aims to plant one million trees per year and increase forest cover to 60% by 2050. Reforestation is a critical aspect of Cambodia’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The visit included the community fisheries of Chumpou Khmoa, Prek Svay, Koh Kachong, and Koh Sdach, and the community protected areas of Peam Krasoap and Boeung Kachhang. The objective of the trip was to build relations between private sector companies and local enterprises, evaluate product quality and hygiene practices of communities, determine the capacity of community enterprises to meet the supply requirements of the private sector, and discuss what conservation practices should be put in place to ensure that community enterprises are also wildlife friendly. The visit concluded with communities agreeing to ship their raw and semi-processed products to the UNICA and Danish Care Food factories in Phnom Penh so that the transportation chain and product quality could be evaluated. Establishing relationships between community-based enterprises and private sector partners is critical to ensuring the long-term success of community conservation and livelihood development. For local communities this type of visit increases their understanding of the broader market opportunities for their products and the steps that communities need to take to meet buyer requirements. For private sector enterprises this type of visit allows them to evaluate opportunities for expanding their supplier network and to clearly communicate to communities what changes need to be made to meet product quality and supply requirements. Additionally, private sector and community-based enterprises are also able to discuss the importance of livelihoods interventions that are conservation friendly. USAID Conserve attended the first annual Tonle Sap Ecotourism Network Forum under the theme of ‘Strengthening Tourism and Ecotourism Services Towards Community Livelihood Improvement and Sustainable Management of Natural Resources in the Tonle Sap Area. H.E. Sok Saken, Minister of Tourism, presided over the opening ceremony. The forum was attended by stakeholders from the public and private sectors, NGO partners, local authorities, and communities around the Tonle Sap Lake. USAID Conserve participated as a panelist at the forum during a session that discussed the vision of the Tonle Sap Ecotourism Network and the potential for community-based ecotourism (CBET) around the Tonle Sap Lake. Several challenges facing CBETs discussed by the panel were lack of access to clean drinking water, limited CBET capacity to develop ecotourism activities, and high transportation costs. Nonetheless, the panel identified numerous opportunities for CBETs. Those include the unique landscape of the Tonle Sap Lake which contains vast flooded forests, floating villages, three Ramsar sites, and numerous wildlife viewing opportunities including critically endangered bird species and waterbird breeding grounds. The forum provided stakeholders with an opportunity to strengthen connections between public institutions, national and international organizations, community-based organizations, and the private sector; exchange perspectives on promoting the development of community-based tourism and ecotourism in the region; and create opportunities for the sale and use of community ecotourism products and services. The forum also raised awareness of sustainable ecotourism initiatives and enabled local communities to actively participate in ecotourism development projects in the Tonle Sap Lake. 🌍 USAID Conserve Shares Lessons Learnt from Cambodia’s REDD+ Projects with ASEAN stakeholders 🌱 USAID Conserve provided an overview of USAID Cambodia’s 12 years of support to REDD+ projects in Cambodia to a diverse group of stakeholders in Jakarta, Indonesia, during several roundtable discussions and at an ASEAN Carbon Markets workshop organized by the US Embassy in Jakarta and the US Mission to ASEAN. The roundtable discussions were held with Indonesian REDD+ project developers, the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry, and other government, private sector, and NGO stakeholders. Perspectives presented by USAID Conserve were complemented by those of Frances Seymour, Senior Advisor for Forests from the US State Department’s Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, the US Forest Service’s Climate Fellow to Vietnam, Silvestrum Climate Associates Principal for Climate Policy and Financing, SERVIR Southeast Asia, and experts on the California, Washington, Oregon, and Regional Greenhouse Gas Trading Initiative emissions compliance markets in the United States. USAID Cambodia has supported the development of nine REDD+ in Cambodia since 2012. These efforts and the state of play of REDD+ globally were the focus of a recent study. The main conclusions of the study highlighted the durability, integrity, and inclusiveness of REDD+ projects supported by USAID Cambodia. Sharing these findings with ASEAN member states encourages REDD+ project developers and proponents in other ASEAN member states to develop high-integrity REDD+ projects that can be nested into jurisdictional REDD+ frameworks, include rigorous and project area-specific baselines, and utilize transparent and accountable benefit-sharing frameworks. The development of high-integrity REDD+ projects in Cambodia and beyond is critical to ensuring government, investors, and civil society have confidence in the positive role that REDD+ projects can play in addressing the climate crisis, supporting local development, and conserving biodiversity. Strong aroma but essential! 🍛 🥘 Prahok is more than just a taste—it’s a symbol of Cambodian culture and resilience. Prahok has been with the Cambodian people since the 9th to 15th-century Angkorian Era. Made from freshwater fish like trey Kompleanh (Moonlight gourami) and trei P’touk (Snakehead murrel), prahok has been at the heart of Khmer cuisine. It is produced during the season when fish are abundant and reserved for times when fish are scarce. Today, our community fisheries continue the age-old practice of producing prahok, ensuring that this staple remains a vital source of protein for many families. However, climate change and economic challenges have made it harder for small-scale fishers to sustain their livelihoods. By supporting local fisheries, you help preserve a critical part of our heritage and provide essential nutrients to our communities. Barringtonia acutangula (L.) Gaertn. is a versatile tree with many benefits. It can thrive in water for long periods and reproduces through seeds and regrowth. This tree is commonly found around Tonle Sap Lake and in flooded forests. It plays a crucial role in providing shelter for various species, especially by offering spawning grounds for fish and providing food and habitat for birds. Additionally, the young leaves can be used in Khmer cuisine, and its bark is traditionally used as medicine to treat malaria and diarrhea. This remarkable tree stabilizes floodplains, stores carbon, and supports countless species. It also provides livelihoods for communities through community-based ecotourism and holds cultural significance for people living in the area.
