Why Eyeballs Don’t Freeze At Subzero Temperatures?
If our hands, toes, noses, and other body parts are susceptible to freezing and getting frostbitten, it might seem unusual that our eyeballs can survive the cold totally unprotected. But, unlike other bodily extremities, the eyes are constantly pumped with a strong supply of warm blood—even in the coldest situations. Furthermore, our eyes are nestled rather deeply in our heads where bone, tissue, and fat also help keep them warm. Essentially, it’s virtually impossible for the eyes to freeze as long as they are inside a warm, functioning body.
Although it seems to defy logic that the wet, soft tissue of the eye wouldn’t immediately freeze when the thermometer drops below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, in truth, the explanation is quite simple. Our eyes don’t ice over because they are almost entirely encased in our warm, well-regulated heads. They are positioned more than halfway inside our noggins and protected by insulating bone, muscle, fat, and eyelids.
Making the eye even less likely to freeze is the fact that it’s filled with numerous blood vessels which continually heat it up with the hot blood from our bodies. In fact, the primary blood source to the eye is the ophthalmic artery, which is a branch off the same, deep artery that supplies the brain. When in cold surroundings, the body diverts even more blood to the brain (and other vital organs) which, in turn, helps keep eyes even warmer.

Why do Horses sleep standing up?
Horses, like human beings, sleep in various degrees of sleep. They can doze or take a nap and experience Slow Wave Sleep (SWS), they also need Rapid Eye Movement (REM) Sleep, the deep sleep in which dreams occur.
Horses can doze or nap in the SWS stage, while standing, this is because of a unique quality of the equine skeletal system, to lock their limbs, specifically their rear knee-caps, allowing the skeleton to hold them upright without engaging the muscles. It is possible because of a special system of tendons and ligaments and is called as the Stay Apparatus in veterinary medicine.
This mechanism has evolved in most prey-animals that live in predator rich regions. Horses due to their straight backs, cannot get up quickly if a predator approaches, before domestication horses sleeping upright gave them a swift advantage of escaping a predator compared to horses lying down to sleep. A horse will never lie down if they do not feel safe.
Horses need REM sleep, from 30 minutes - 3 hours for their healthy functioning, most often these occur post midnight. Experts say that REM sleep occurs in short intervals of 10-20 minutes, a maximum REM cycle in horses is 45-minutes. They prefer to sleep during the day, and if you see a horse lying down or a group of horses lying down, you will also observe one horse standing up, guarding others and keeping an eye out for predators.
Foals spend more time sleeping than adult horses, Older horses might have trouble sleeping because of joint issues as they age, or due to neurological disorder like Narcolepsy (a condition in which a horse suddenly falls asleep), Hypersomnia (excessive sleep or lethargy ) or REM sleep disorder (a horse wakes itself up with excessive body movements during sleep).
Other reasons for horses not lying down to sleep are stress, not enough space to sleep, discomfort of a new place or due to a new horse being introduced to the herd.

The word "Nano" comes from ancient Greek and means "Dwarf" (nanos means dwarf), used as a prefix "nano" denotes 10^9, that is "one-billionth", so a nanometer is equal to a billionth of a meter (1nM = 0.000000001), a single strand of hair is about 80,000 nanometer so you can imagine how small the nano scale actually is!

Many attempts have been made to increase the NUE with little success paving the way to apply nanotechnology to solve this problem.
In addition to increasing the NUE, nanotechnology has been used for controlled release of chemical compounds, improved yields by conventional fertilizers and used as bactericidal additives.
Nanoparticles have high surface area, sorption capacity, and controlled-release kinetics.Nanostructured fertilizers can increase the nutrient use efficiency through mechanisms such as targeted delivery, slow or controlled release in responding to environmental triggers and biological demands. More research and funding is required to optimize these smart delivery systems and cater to the ever increasing food needs of billions of people worldwide.
