Description Applications are invited for a four-year fully funded PhD research studentship in AI techniques for automated design of microwave antennas in the Communications, Sensing and Imaging (CSI) Group, James Watt School of Engineering, University of Glasgow, Scotland, UK. The program is funded by one of the leading CAD companies, The MathWorks Inc. (the creator of MATLAB and SIMULINK). The PhD student will focus on research into surrogate model-assisted optimization techniques and corresponding CAD tool development: the final product will be available as part of the global MATLAB distribution and hence will have very wide international visibility. The studentship is expected to be available from 1st July 2020 (negotiable). AI-driven antenna design is one of the strengths of the CSI group. Its SADEA algorithm series is widely used by many academic and industry users. For the design of complex antennas, the SADEA algorithm series is often the only viable solution. Given that SADEA-I is available in MATLAB 2020a, this project focuses on investigating more intelligent AI-driven antenna design methods. The source code will be provided to MathWorks and embedded in future MATLAB versions. Clearly, this will be a sound track record for the PhD student’s future career, either from industry or academic point of view. Honors Funding for: UK students, EU students, or International students Funding amount: Full tuition fee waiver for four years plus an annual stipend of £15,285 (tax free, funded by MathWorks) Requirements Applicants should hold at least a first or upper-second class honours degree (or the equivalent, e.g. GPA greater than 3.3) in computer science, mathematics or engineering. Competence in mathematics and machine learning (at least one of these) is essential and evidence of extensive experience in programming is required. Experience with MATLAB is highly desirable. Knowledge of electromagnetic simulation and antennas is not required but is highly desirable. How to register Informal enquires are very welcome and should be made to Dr. Bo Liu via email( Bo.Liu@glasgow.ac.uk ). Please submit a full CV together with a covering letter describing how you meet the requirements. Professor Dr. Bo Liu Email:Bo.Liu@glasgow.ac.uk Tel.:+44 (0) 141 330 2000
