South Africans have new opportunities to reduce estate tax liabilities following changes to donations and capital gains tax announced in the 2026 Budget.
This is according to DBM Attorneys, which said the amendments affect how individuals plan their estates and how deceased estates are administered.
The law firm explained that estate planning requires consideration of asset transfers, tax liabilities, and liquidity to ensure an estate can meet its obligations after death.

The Consumer Goods Council of South Africa (CGCSA) has called for stronger collaboration between the public and private sectors to combat the illicit economy, which costs South Africa an estimated R68 billion annually.
CGSCA CEO, Zinhle Tyikwe, said crime affecting consumer goods had evolved beyond a public safety issue and has become a challenge to the country’s economic competitiveness.
She said that this problem needs to be addressed through stronger collaboration between the government, businesses, law enforcement, and civil society.

The Constitutional Court’s recent decision to bar Shell from offshore oil exploration on the Wild Coast could cost the country R23 billion in GDP per year, according to research by the Energeo Alliance.
On 14 August 2026, South Africa’s Constitutional Court (ConCourt) ruled against the fuel giant Shell in its bid to conduct oil exploration along the Wild Coast.
The decision followed a lengthy court battle, with the ConCourt saying that Shell failed to adequately consult local communities.
The decision has been welcomed by several local and international environmental groups, but industry players have been alarmed.

In 2008, Eskom began building Kusile Power Station, which was scheduled for completion by 2017 at a cost of R121 billion.
18 years and R233.4 billion later, the utility now expects Kusile to be completed in the 2028 financial year.
This was revealed in Eskom’s 2026 annual report, with the utility explaining that although all six generation units are operational, significant work remains at Kusile.
Eskom estimates that Kusile’s final close-out will be completed in the 2028 financial year, with plant and remedial works still to be carried out.

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) has gazetted the consultation document for Eskom’s proposed 8.8% price increases for 2027, which are now open for public comment.
The consultation document outlines the proposed changes as part of the Eskom Retail Tariff Structural Adjustment (ERTSA) and calls for feedback on specific questions.
Nersa said that stakeholders can comment on the document until 2 October 2026, after which it will collate all comments and take them into consideration when making the decision.

If you own a dog or a cat, keep backyard chickens, operate a working horse cart, or care about animal cruelty in Cape Town, a major draft law demands your immediate attention.
The City of Cape Town has published its Draft Animal Keeping By-law, 2026 for public comment, closing on Tuesday, 29 September 2026.
The proposal includes groundbreaking protections for animals—long championed by the SPCA—such as banning guard dog chaining, stopping cart horses from working in temperatures over 30°C, and outlawing cruel glue traps.
However, the fine print introduces several far-reaching interventions into private homes:
Permits for Every Pet: Every dog and cat over six months will require an official municipal permit, accompanied by a fe and proof of rabies
vaccination.Compulsory
Sterilisation: All dogs and cats over six months of age must be surgically sterilised unless the owner applies for and pays for a municipal exemption permit.
Strict Pet Quotas: Caps pets based on erf type (e.g., maximum 2 dogs in a flat, 3 in a standard house, 4 cats per property). Keeping more requires municipal inspections and written permission from adjacent neighbours.Warrantless Inspections:
Section 42 empowers municipal officials to enter and search private premises without a court warrant under certain conditions.
Backyard Food Curbs: Completely bans roosters and pigs in residential areas, limits hens to five without a permit, and demands approved architectural building plans for basic chicken coops and rabbit runs.Where do you stand?

The immediate threat of electricity supply interruptions to parts of Johannesburg has been removed after the City settled R5.25 billion in overdue debt to Eskom, but questions remain over how the payment was funded and whether the underlying problem has been fixed.
The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) welcomed Eskom’s withdrawal of a process under the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act (PAJA) that could have resulted in electricity supply being reduced, interrupted or terminated at certain bulk supply points.
Eskom confirmed on 21 August that it had received the final payment settling the City of Johannesburg and City Power’s accumulated overdue debt of R5.255 billion in full.

Musina Municipality is a local municipality within the Vhembe District Municipality, in the Limpopo province.
It is the northernmost local municipality in South Africa and borders Botswana, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

Eskom’s top executives received over R85 million in pay for 2026, with chief executive officer Dan Marokane scoring R12.2 million.
The numbers were revealed in the group’s annual results for the year ending 31 March 2026.
Marokane’s salary comprised a base salary of R9.54 million, up 6% from the R9 million base salary he received in 2025.
He also received a short-term incentive (STI) bonus of R2.5 million for the year. However, Eskom noted that a R3.7 million STI is awaiting shareholder approval.

Regulatory compliance and strict labour legislation are the top challenges to business growth, as identified by 369 firms interviewed in the 2026 Business Environment Survey.
The Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry commissioned the Bureau for Economic Research at Stellenbosch University to survey 369 businesses to identify what needs fixing to promote much-needed economic growth.
