GI tags in India 🍁 Why in news? Adding to the present collection of Geographical Indications (GIs), nine new items, including gamocha of Assam, Tandur red gram of Telangana, Raktsey Karpo apricot of Ladakh, and Alibag white onion of Maharashtra, have been given the coveted GI tag. Kerala has been awarded five GI tags for its agricultural produce. Total GI tags in India ▶  With this, the total number of GI tags in India comes to 432. ▶  The top five states holding the maximum number of GIs are Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, and Kerala. ⏩ Of these, 401 are Indian-origin products, 31 are foreign-origin. ▶  Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are states with the highest number of GI tags, followed by Kerala (35), Uttar Pradesh (34), and Maharashtra (31). What is GI Tag? ▶  The Geographical Indication is recognised by the World Trade Organization. ▶  It is used to denote the geographical territory from where a product--agricultural, natural, or manufactured--originates, and also carries an assurance of quality and attributes unique to that specific geographic region. ▶  India became a signatory to this convention, when, as a member of WTO, it enacted the Geographical Indications (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999, which came into effect on September 15, 2003. #PolityAndGovernance

SPECIES IN NEWS 🍁 Why in news? Two species that were previously extinct on the Galapagos Islands have reappeared a decade. 🌼  Locally extinct cactus finches and geckos are now "thriving" in their restored habitats. Galápagos finch 🌸  This cactus-loving Galápagos finch has an especially distinctive bill, which is long, deep at the base, and often appears droopy. 🌸  Bill is black on breeding male and dull orange on female and nonbreeding male. Union Island gecko (Gonatodes daudini) 🌸  The Union Island gecko is brightly coloured and the size of a paper clip. 🌸  It is found in Chatham Bay forest on the island of the same name in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. #Environment

🗺🗺 LOCATION IN NEWS🗺🗺 India-China-Bhutan Tri-junction area of Doklam 🍁 Why in News? China has set up a ropeway near the Torsa Nala (near Doklam) on its side of the India-Bhutan-China tri-junction, according to defense sources. About: 🌸 Doklam (or Zhonglan or Donglong) is a disputed area between China and Bhutan just like Jakarlung and Pasamlung. 🌸 It is an area with a plateau and a valley that lies on the Bhutan-China border, near India. 🌸 It is located between Tibet's Chumbi valley to the North, Bhutan's Ha valley to the East, and India's Sikkim state to the West. 🌸  The Doklam plateau in western Bhutan is claimed by both China and Bhutan. 🌸  India does not claim Doklam but supports Bhutan's claim. 🌸  China’s claims in the territory of Doklam: Zompelri ridge on the south and the confluence of the Torsa Nala with Amo Chu on the east. #Geography
