ā Millet refers to small-seeded grasses that are often termed nutri-cereals or dryland-cereals. It includes jowar, bajra and ragi.
ā Millets can be grown in inferior soils as they are less sensitive to soil deficiencies.
ā Top millet producing states in the country are Rajasthan, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh in the same order.
ā Millets are known for their high nutritional value. For e.g., ragi is rich in iron, calcium, and roughage.
ā In order to encourage millet production, Government started the āInitiative for Nutritional Security through Intensive Millets Promotionā. The initiative aims to demonstrate the improved production and post-harvest technologies, and to demonstrate value addition techniques, in an integrated manner, with cluster approach.

ā Wheat is the second most important cereal crop in India after rice. India produces about 12% of the total wheat production of the world and is the second largest producer after China.
ā It is primarily a crop of temperate zone. Hence, its cultivation in India is done during winter i.e., rabi season.
ā The total area under the crop is about 29.8 million hectares in the country. The production of wheat
in the country has significantly increased from 75.81 million MT in 2006-07 to an all-time record high of 94.88 million MT in 2011-12.
ā In terms of export, India ranks much behind countries like Russia and U.S.A. as most of its production is consumed internally.
