Prosperity Party's Regime Must Release the Illegally Detained Oromo Liberation Front Leaders and Members.
OLF Press Release
The abuses of rights that the Prosperity Party perpetrates on OLF leaders are brutal.
Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) is a legally registered political organization in Ethiopia. The endless illegal detention of its leaders and members outside the legal parameters is a disastrous path. For years, leaders and members languish in known and unknown detention quarters and prison houses. Their families are subjected to miseries, and psychological distresses as they know nothing about the fate of their loved ones.
Various rights groups and actors have confirmed the illegality and cruelty of the endless detention. The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, Ethiopian Election Board and Courts at multiple levels have long-established the illegality of the arrest and strongly requested their immediate release of the detainees. As known elsewhere, the role of the police is to protect citizens from abuses and illegal mistreatment and, above all, to carry out the court's order effectively. In this case, Oromiya Police has repeatedly repudiated court orders and kept the victims in custody. The court has, time and again, ordered the police to appear in court and explain why they illegally kept the detainee. But the police have made no show to the court.
On July 18 2022, the court at Burayu District, based on the habeas corpus
petition by the detainees' attorney has ruled that the detainees should be released immediately. After four days of delay, on July 21 2022, the court's written order reached the police. But the police made no action to comply with the court order and have kept the detainees in custody till today.
The leaders and officers of OLF who have been illegally kept in Burayyu District Police Station and denied justice till today include:
1. Mr Abdi Raggasa, Member of the Executive Committee (EC), was detained in February, 2019;
2. Mr. Michael Boran, a Member of the EC, was detained on June July 03, 2020
3. Mr. Kennasa Ayyana, a Member of the Central Committee, was detained on July 03, 2020
4. Dr. Gadaa Oljiraa, Head of the OLF Gullallee Office, was detained on December 20, 2020
5. Mr. Dawit Abdata, Senior Political Officer, was detained on July 12, 2020
6. Mr. Lammi Benya, SeniorPolitical Officer, was detained on July 12, 2020
7. Mr. Gada Gabbisa, Senior Political Officer, was detained on February 19 2020
The Prosperity Party, despite its promises "not to imprison citizens without due investigation", has long embarked on illegally incarcerating peaceful political actors and has caused incalculable suffering and miseries to the detainee's families. It has also vehemently staged on marginalizing political parties and actors to monopolize the political space. Such behaviours of the successive Ethiopian regimes have long been the major causes of conflict and instability, death, suffering, famine and poverty. The scale of brutality and human rights abuses at the level of sidelining institutions of justice such as the court and ignoring its order is a big red line that indicates the future direction of this country.
Thus, we call upon the international community to pressure the Ethiopian government to adhere to the constitutional order, respect human rights, and release the illegally detained OLF leaders, members, and other political detainees.
We also call upon all peace-loving people and the Oromo people to stand by the illegally detained leaders and members of the OLF to demand their release.
Victory to the Masses!
